What a horrible example this principal sets. He should be fired.

Sunday April 28, 2013, 5:41 pm

The girl came forward to a teacher to report that another student had raped her in a soundproof band room on school property. However, when the teacher then informed the principal, Terry Uruquhart, of what had occurred, he refused to take action. In fact, Uruquhart went so far as to tell the victim and her family not to go to the police as this could “jeopardize [the rapist’s] chance of getting recruited for a college [basketball] team.”

Worried that the rapist could sexually assault someone else, the victim and her parents wisely chose to ignore Uruquhart’s request and informed local authorities. However, before police took any action, a different student came forward with charges of sexual assault against the same attacker. Meanwhile, the first victim was ignored by her school’s authorities and was forced to attend classes with her attacker while he walked free. On top of this, the girl soon found herself the victim of vicious rumors and cyberbullying by classmates calling her a “liar” and a “slut.” When her parents informed the school of this, Principal Uruquhart once again did nothing.

Eventually, the rapist was charged with a single count of misdemeanor assault and battery – a lesser charge than rape – and was very briefly suspended from playing with the rest of his basketball team.

I signed this petition and will recommend that others do as well.

Thank you, Rose for bringing this to our attention.

When we worry more about an athletic scholarship for a rapist than the crime of rape, we have serious problems. We as a society must turn and look inward. I have not forgotten the Steubenville rape incident, and too many others that occurred. This girl was 100% in the right to report this rape, and the principal should lose his job. The rapist belongs locked up behind bars.

I signed a different petition earlier, but was only too glad to sign again! What a horrid crime - and a miserable follow-up! They should absolutely fire this principal - and as you said lock up the rapist!

More than an apology is warranted in this case. The victim was bullied by her attacker, and the principal allowed the victim to be victimized again, and again. The young woman and her family should sue the pants off the school district, the principal and her rapist!
Noted and signed. Thanks, Kit for the forward, and Rose for posting the petition.

"...Uruquhart went so far as to tell the victim and her family not to go to the police as this could “jeopardize [the rapist’s] chance of getting recruited for a college [basketball] team.”"

So the young randy's life and career are more important than the dignity, health, and life of the young woman he violently raped? I think not!!! He has stolen something from her that can never be recouped! I am glad the girl and her parents are suing. In my opinion, the principal should be included in any law suit and he should be fired. As I understand, the boy has raped another girl since this. It is not the girl's that have "ruined" his life. It is he himself! If anything, they have done him a favour --- now maybe he will get the help he so desparately needs. I'd also like to see him on a dangerous offenders list.

Yes, and just this past week in India a five-year old girl was locked in a room for days, raped repeatedly by a 22-year old who then left her for dead, was seriously injured both mentally and physically, and what did the police do when her parents finally found her and reported the crime? They offered her father a bribe to NOT report the crime! Not a single sexual assault should go unpunished! Perhaps schools should stop "glorifying" their sports heroes and making them believe they're entitled to do anything they want. In this case, the principal is an idiot, and the students and parents should rally against him. And the female students need some counseling as well. To stick up for the basketball star instead of their female counterpart is sad enough, but to contribute to making her life a living hell by participating in the harassment is unforgivable!

Signed and noted. Principal Uruquhart is not fit for his job. I wonder if he's fit for any job. Thank you, Rose, for posting this, and thank you, Kit, for the forward.

Kit already said it all. Thx for this alert and to Rose for posting this incredible story!
If this keeps going on like that the US is just one step away from Sharia law such as flogging the victim.

Could Lee l. possibly share that other petition with us as well?

In the petition it also states: "Worried that the rapist could sexually assault someone else, the victim and her parents wisely chose to ignore Uruquhart’s request and informed local authorities. However, before police took any action, a DIFFERENT student came forward with charges of sexual assault against the same attacker. " So..he's doing it again and AGAIN, (rapist). I am angry that the principal in this case showed no compassion towards this young lady and her parents, and encouraged her to NOT report it.!!, because the attacker was on a sports team, and of a potential scholarship to a college. If the Principal had a daughter in his school, would the outcome be the same? The cyber bullying is a concern of mine also, and it's getting out of hand, (I volunteer at 2 different schools here, to help the students). My other question is: Where was the Band Teacher(s) in this case? Where was he/she when this incident happened? Soundproof rooms should, and are, off limits and LOCKED, (the middle school where I worked at), until both teachers were there in the band room. OR, if they are not in there, the band room is LOCKED. This Principal needs to be terminated, and the rest of his staff, (other administrators) need to take refresher classes to assist and protect students. Glad to read that the National Women’s Law Center has taken up this incident in a lawsuit, good for them.! Thank you, Rose for this, I definitely signed.!!

Mr. Uruquhart should have immediately been relieved of his duties at the school as he is a detriment to the education of both the victim and the perpetrator and the rest of the student body. The parents of all the children in that school should ban together against him and the school policies where athletics takes precedence over right.

I knew that Care2 folks would care about this. This jerk should be cooling his heels in the penitentiary, not playing basketball. Congratulations Michigan, you have instigated the growth of a new rapist, and sent the message this criminal act is some how okay.

From the article:

"Eventually, the rapist was charged with a single count of misdemeanor assault and battery – a lesser charge than rape – and was very briefly suspended from playing with the rest of his basketball team."

I would also like to add to my comment above, the adherence of having security procedures in place at all times within any school. High schools, middle, intermediate, elementary. (This includes: vigilance by staff in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, gym(s), rest rooms, stadiums, offices, libraries, school buses arrivals/ departures.) All teachers are supposed to be on a 'assigned area', daily/weekly rotation, with administrators on board as well. The more visibility that the students see, with teachers on morning, afternoon duty, the chances that more positive behaviors will occur. I guess is what I'm getting at is, what happened in this band room should have never happened. Period.!!!!

Your signature has been recorded. I agree Edith, these sports programs and the ones who play in them given a free ride for their crimes. I'm glad this was reported and shame on those who work for the schools and do not view it for what it is, a crime! I'm sorry their scholarships or whatever become jepordized, perhaps they all should think of those things BEFORE they commit such acts upon another against their will.

Sorry, too soon Rose to give you another star today but you deserve another.

Signed - thanks Rose! About twenty stars to other people here like John and Lee and Dandelion and Kit and Gran Pat and Angelika and.... They all express far better than I could the fizzing fury when I heard of this! I take John's point about the investigation being downplayed because of fears of exacerbating racial tension - but surely not to investigate so heinous a crime would exacerbate tensions more than ever? As well as letting this POS rapist go free to do it again as he seems to have done. Once again society is saying 'If we like you then you can commit any crime you like!' - this is WRONG!!!
