Please pledge not drive on May 30.

Dependence Day is coming up next month. In case you don't know, we import close to two-thirds of our oil - and Dependence Day is the day when we effectively runs out of our domestic supply of oil for the year.

This year, to 'celebrate' Dependence Day', I'm working to get 5,000 people to pledge that on that day - May 30th - they will drive nowhere. If just 5,000 of us take part, we will be keeping 100,000 pounds of CO2 out of the air - and sending a strong message to our elected officials that we need real solutions.

So, will you pledge to take part in Drive Nowhere Day on May 30th? Simply click the link below, or paste it into your browser, to sign the pledge.

Last year four presidential candidates took up the our Dependence Day initiative to double the gas mileage standard (and two of them are still in the race), so we're hoping for even greater success in 2008.

Drive Nowhere Day will be great for two reasons:

First, it will help reduce our consumption of oil, and hopefully a bunch of people will make every Friday Drive Nothing Day, not just May 30th

Second, we will be sending a message to our elected officials that scores of people are willing to give up their cars, if we have good public transit

So please, join me in pledge that on Dependence Day, May 30, you will drive nowhere.

And for this to work, you've got to tell your friends and family to get involved, so please, get this message out there far and wide!

Sincerely,

carol, i will pledge to do so... we did the same on april 15th... we made sure that we had everything we needed and we made no purchases and didn't even leave the house that day... we can certainly do the same on may 30th... the general public has no idea the impact we would have on commerce if we all banded together and did this... count me and hubby in...:)

Thanks Carol!

I'll be staying home in Redwood Valley in Southern Ecotopia (Mendocino County, Northern Cali) working in our community garden and doing other community chores, and working on my website (where I posted the event, see: www.ecopalooza.net...Thanks again!!!).

I haven't owned a car for a big part of my adult life. Although, giving up meat (for all time) will do more to help the planet than not driving, but giving them both up (or quiting meat and limiting the car) is even better!

Go human powered! Go Veg!

Great idea but not possible for everyone. Some of us have to work and if you are like me, I live to far from my job to walk and missing work is not a feasible option.

I signed. I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home, but like Raine said, it's not feasable for everyone.

All of those who, for whatever reason, have to drive can still drive as little as possible and be with us in spirit. :)

I keep hearing about the movie about General Motors killing the electric car. The NRDC has learned even when population growth decreases, use of petroleum can sometimes continue to increase because communities are designed for vehicles.

I thank all of you making a difference - you are or are beginning to eat vegetarian/flexitarian, you write me you ride Amtrak, you practice family planning, you will buy electric vehicle when you can afford it.

Keep up the good work!

I drive No Where most of the time...my vehicle sits in the driveway....needs to be washed....I spend more on insurance (under $50.00 per month) than I do on gas. And, I am planning to arrange my life so that I drive even less than I do now. It's kind of a game with me to see how little I can give the oil companies.

Well. let me add some more! Yu know the old saying: Trouble is a mother of inventions!
So, I hope when we all face lack of some gods, as oil is, it will make us to find alternative way to get it. Better, and more clean and healthy one. For everybody -for people and for this planet generally. These attempts existed before, but were stopped by oil companies and current car (motors on gasolne) producers!
