You can do more!

I was surprised that this petition was still here in Care2.

I also signed on with Single Payer Action.

I would love to see our American Government do more for the people living in this country - USA. I also keep wondering what has happened to our country since "Ike" Dwight D. Eisenhower left office.

I was with some guys at the coffee shop today and was saying, jokingly, that if I had a Family & young children, I should move to France, Canada, Sweden. The "new" health bill recently passed by the House of Representatives was just awful!

TY, Jill for article & "C" for forward.

So much fo rthe 'land of the free'. It only applies to the already advantaged. Seems like in America, having a disability can wedge one between a rock and a hard place. I can't imagine the anguish this could cause.

These two have underutilized talents we could use in Canada and we could always use another couple more votes against the Conservatives here.

this has made me wonder, how many of those losing their homes are veterans, infirm from the war they were in? suffering from either illness or sever injury that has taken it's toll on their body, how many of them were permitted to fight for their country, only to lose their home?
i am opposed to this regardless, no one should become homeless because they are physically incapacitated.
signed, ty Jill, and thank Just for the forward.

The Medicaid Estate Recovery program will affect most Americans because it is a predatory loan that targets, not just the disabled, but seniors. most people at some point will need home health care or nursing home care, or their spouse will. it is only people who are on Medicaid just to get assistance with the cost of these overpriced programs. Most Americans can't afford it, especially in their retirement. The petition is still up because I cannot seem to get enough signatures. people don't think it will happen to them. They think it is only the disabled. They don't think abut getting older and needing assistance.
As for government programs and not trusting them, I don't trust the trash in Wahsington either but i don't think leaving people on their own to fend for themselves is the answer either. If it was not for government programs my husband and i would not have our Bachelors degrees. Our families could never have afforded it. If it were not for government programs he would not be in a wheelchair right now that costs more than a car (and it does not come with AC OR stereo). Just to replace an armrest companies charge around $300 for ONE. It may be higher now, that price was years ago. Magnifiers for visually impaired run a couple hundred. It is nothing more than a hunk of galss, well, plexiglass now. it is stronger than the ones in drug stores. A CCTV runs thousands of dollors and computer programs for the disabled start at $500. All this adaptive equipment is overpriced and people with disabilitiies would not have a chance if it were not for government programs. Unfortuantely when we moved to Georgia, even though the program is a Federal program they left it up to statds to administer it. Georgians pocket the money and deny adaptive equipment and home modifications for the disabled. As one supervisor told me, "I'm glad when we deny someone services." They have been investigated by the Feds (Thanks to us.), they were in serveral violations but nothing has changed. Georgians think they won the civil war and don't have to listne to the federal government. I thank God we grew up in florida where we were given a lot of assistance.
I don't see how Capitalism and "free market" would save the disabled and give them any of the cahnces they are getting now. Medicaid Estate Recovery Program is, again, a result of pillaging Medicare money by the private industry. That is why our politicians keep saying we are running out of money. They keep stealing from it. Just like Obama is doing now. He is paying half the high cost of this healthcare Bill with Medicare money. Why? Because seniors and the disabled don't have a strong expensive lobby to pay them off.
Medicaid Recovery was compliments of the Clinton Administration. it is part of OBRA '93. In fact Congress was split on it. One of the duties of the VP is to break a tie vote. Gore did, in favor of this barbaric legislation. This is how Clinton paid off our debt, on the backs of seniors. They stole from the Medicare Trust Fund as well.
Single payer, Expanded Medicare for All, HR 676 the ONLY sane way to go. Thre is not one good argument against it. People should never suffer or die based on their income.

Thank you for recognizing our value Karen. The US doesn't. My husband is also certified in computer networking. He is my technical support. Firends and family call from all over the country to get his help rather than calling their tech support. LOL
So where is a good place to move in Canada? I have been looking at the BC area.
We were hoping to adopt once we moved in the country in Georgia. We tried to get foster kids but Georgians feel that "no normal child would be happy living with a quadriplegic." I hear adoption in Canada is much cheaper and easier in the US.
Maybe we can work and start a family, finally.
Kevin is afraid he will become a pocicle up there. I told him not to worry, he'll thaw in the spring.

My Mother had a small savings account for her to be buried with. It was only $6,500 as the most she ever made in her life was $9 an hour, but when she became too frail and needed the help of extra care beyond what I could give her, the State said they would take that money.

She cried, then how will I be buried? I have worked all my life and I can't have enough money to bury myself?

Thankfully I was able to move the money into a pre-paid burial account as the amount was allowable to do so. But honestly, to put this poor woman, who had NEVER asked the government for a thing in her entire life...worked from age of 16 to 67...is a divorced woman who raised her child alone, worked each day, never went on aid, to be faced at 87 with the State telling her she'll end up in a paupers grave or someone else can pay her funeral....because they are going to take the little bit she had saved to bury herself with.

This is such a disgrace in this Country....where is the Honor of our Elders?

Don't even let me start of what I got into and have gone through having had a husband who had cancer twice and died when I still had two children to raise. We had both worked hard, I was a Social Worker, he a Roofer, we did all the community service type of things and taught our children to give back as well. Paid our taxes, helped the Elders, but when he got sick, between co-pays, deductibles, refused medical treatments the insurance would not cover, the costs to go to these treatments, the lack of income due to his cancer...the list goes on. I watched, our children watched, and unfortunately he had to watch in his final days too, everything we had ever worked for go away.

I sold our furniture, clothes, and our final days with him instead of being able to let him have a little joy was cutting back on the heat, and being sick he needed heat, cutting back on the food, when his stomach required certain foods now.

He finally said, I think I'm going to die before you loose it all.....he stopped all further treatments so the cancer would kill him faster as he knew his being sick would totally wipe out is family.

Read that last sentence again.

As it was I had to sell our home and downsize to a much smaller home to keep it going to get my children through school. The Theives that stole the life insurance thereby my having none when he took his journey to the Spirit World. Yup, while he was sick with the cancer I got a call from a detective to say the employee who sold the life insurance policy wasn't on their employers rolls anymore. The employee had stolen policies, pens, all the things that were official but were stolen, so our premiums had gone to a post office box and into the former employees pocket....so not underwritten by John Hancock. Now my husband had cancer so could not be covered.

That is why we sold furniture and did everything we could so we didn't completely loose the house or that would be gone too if we asked the State for help. At least with a sale, after all bills were paid off, I was able to keep a wee bit. For now.

People you are only a heartbeat away from loosing it all.....it doesn't matter if you play by the rules....it just does not matter. This system is the most insane form of living and most people are living under an illusion of this can't happen in America....until it does happen to them.

I've already signed thanks Jill and fwrded.
Am at work at the moment so can comment on this site.
The problem with this bill is not that it is too socialistic, the problem is that it will entrench inequalities and in many cases excacerbate them.
I watched one of the tea-bagger rallies on a bbc news item and i'd never heard such selfish,pre-civilised drivel.."why should I pay for someone else's healthcare"from some miserable, lemon sucking woman who was happy to see all of her taxes go to any number of corporations..on such beneficial items as bigger wmd's,than on a life support unit for a baby.
The principle of a civilised healthcare system is that we look after each and every person and that the profit motive is either non-existent or does not get in the way of providing care in any way shape or form..
Obama has struck out for the third way a kind of forced contributions from those who have no means to pay..Crucally this will involve no redistribution of wealth and little real threat to business interests'.
That is the essential conservativism of this bill...that moaning ,whining willing victim of right wing propaganda at the tea-baggers rally ..lets call her Lemon Tea..and her ilk show a deep level of paranoia if they are ready to label Obama care as socialistic...
A socialisted healthcare system based on need..does not, contrary to what Ronnie Raygun said lead to a socialist society..it leads to a mixed economy..wherin the gross inequality of the market (ie work hours and talent will never be matched with appropriate reward..road sweepers and teachers are better at their jobs than bankers and put in more hours..but will never be paid for success as much as a banker gets for failure)..is ameliorated by a welfare system funded by taxes based on ability to pay..yeah I know that we people pay more percentage of our taxes than the whining 0.5% who rule us..but there was a time..and there still is in some countries where people pay tax proportionate to earnings..those are the principles of fairness.

I really appreciate your signatures and good wishes. All of you. I don't want it to be about me though. We represent ony two out of thousands who are going through this. My husband worked at the college with disabled students. The students in wheelcahirs went on to get their Bachelors degrees and many continued to get theri Masters degrees They now sit at home so they can get Medicaid for attendant care. Ther are only tow ways to gt ong term care in the US. Either be rich or take a vow of poverty to receive Medicaid. It is government induced poverty. Some poeple do work and put their education and skills to good use but they cannot accept money for their work.
This is disgusting. I had to give up my carrer as a biologist because I married a quadriplegic. That is how our government works. They feel people with disabilities shoud be punished and anyone who dares fall in love with them. My career was going well but it would never pay enough for attendant cre. My husbands job di dnot pay much either.
We paid for his care for years, and his medical supplies and wheelchair repairs. We paid it all ourselves and HE HAD INSURANCE! Insurance does not pay for any of it. Once all those bills were paid, attendant care cost us nearly $8,000 a year. It is closer to $15,000 now if you pay low and don't go thru and agency. That is for minimal care. It cn go as high as $30,000 or more if you need more hours.
How are most Americans supposed to pay for that?
When we moved we could not find work and had to get help. unfortunately Medicaid was the only help in GA. In almost 40 years of paralysis he never was on medicaid or Medicare. Now we are trapped.
I thought all of that was barbaric enough but the Medicaid Estate Recovery Program is too horrid to even conceive..
You would not believe the things Kevin had to do and endure just to get attendant care his whole life. He had to be creative and take many chances to get care without Medicaid. He even came close to being killd a couple of times. Even after all that,Congress thinks he should be punished.
he is writing an autobiography now and we are trying to figure out how to get him on the lecture circuit. He's given talks all the time to Jackson Memorial Hopsital and FAMU for newly injured poeple and physical therapitst who will be working with the disabled.

Single payer Expanded Medicare for All HR 676, the ONLY economical and humane way to go.
This if from the PEN
A couple weeks ago the Democratic Senate Committee put out a video
called "I'm A Democrat, And I'm A Republican" (itself a play on the
cultural icon Mac ads), begging us for more campaign contributions
based on the premise that even 60 votes in their caucus is not enough
to pass a decent bill. So we decided to produce a series of our own
issue advocacy satire videos, to propagate the truth that NEITHER the
Democrats NOR the Republicans want real health care reform. And you
can watch the first one on this page.

Medicare For All Fax Action Page:
http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1020.php

And from the same action you can also send a fax (for no charge) to
all your members of Congress (or special new advocacy capability)
calling for the passage of Medicare for All, instead of the
ridiculous sell out to medical corporation special interests that
barely squeaked out of the House over the weekend, and only at the
additional price of a total betrayal of a woman's right to choose.

For this special fax action there is a prepared petition text which
you can read on the page above, calling on Congress to get serious
about doing something the American people all want, and pass to
economical and efficient Medicare for all. But you can still add any
personal comments of your own you like.

And if you are represented by any member of the Congressional
so-called Progressive Caucus, you might tell them how profoundly
ASHAMED of them you are, given that outside of the courageous
exceptions of Dennis Kucinich and Eric Massa not one of others voted
against this terrible, awful bill (HR 3962). Remember back in June
they all signed a letter that they would only support a bill with a
"robust" public option. Instead they all voted for a total corporate
insurance take over of our national health care system, and they were
so anxious to sell out any principle they ever claimed to have, that
they threw a woman's right to choose under the bus along the way.

Please take careful note we said a CORPORATE take over of health
care. Because the only thing more dishonest that the Democrats
claiming there is some kind of meaningful public option in the bill
are the Republicans braying that it is a government take over. It is
not "socialized" medicine as the "one smear fits all" demagogues on
the right shout, but instead capitalist medicine, with the most
feeble possible public plan they thought they could pass off to the
American people.

And of course, nobody expects the Senate to turn it into something
better. Instead, it will be a monumental struggle now to even derail
the horrible anti-choice provision, which dictates that after a woman
is forced to buy one of the official overpriced insurance exchange
plans, even if she paid for it with 100% of her own money, that
provider cannot cover the expense of an abortion.

For those who argued we should just pass SOMETHING, even if it was a
bad bill, because they said we could fix it later, this is what you
get from a strategy of perpetual compromise, a bill that is utterly
beyond redemption. It's time to throw HR 3962 in the medical waste
bin, and do what should have been done in the first place, build a
new national health care system on what actually DOES work, by
extending the existing economical and efficient Medicare plan to all
ages.
