Celebrate Buy Nothing Day

Held each year in North America on November 28th and internationally on November 29th, Buy Nothing Day has exploded into a global movement to live more simply and buy a whole lot less. Started by the Canadian Media Foundation (Adbusters’ Magazine), Buy Nothing Day, held each year after American Thanksgiving, is a 24-hour moratorium on shopping.

Buy Nothing

This is the whole point of Buy Nothing Day – don’t buy anything for 24 hours. This doesn’t mean just avoiding a full-on shopping spree, it means that you attempt to go one day without buying a coffee, gasoline, lunch, a yoga class, etc. One full day without buying anything, for some people this will be a lot more difficult than you think. However it is important that we reduce our consumption. The Story of Stuff reports that in the USA more than 99% of stuff that people buy ends up in the garbage within 6 months of purchase.
Leave Money At Home

Leave all money, bankcards and credit cards at home. For many individuals this will make them feel a bit naked or vulnerable. However, it is important to gradually lessen your dependence on allowing money to feel safe or having your buying ‘power’ as a primary component of your identity.

Buy Nothing Day

Suddenly, we ran out of money and, to avoid collapse, we quickly pumped liquidity back into the system. But behind our financial crisis a much more ominous crisis looms: we are running out of nature… fish, forests, fresh water, minerals, soil. What are we going to do when supplies of these vital resources run low?

There’s only one way to avoid the collapse of this human experiment of ours on Planet Earth: we have to consume less.

It will take a massive mindshift. You can start the ball rolling by buying nothing on November 28th. Then celebrate Christmas differently this year, and make a New Year’s resolution to change your lifestyle in 2009.

It’s now or never!
Take the Plunge!

As the planet starts heating up, maybe it’s time to finally go cold turkey. Take the personal challenge by locking up your debit card, your credit cards, your money clip, and see what it feels like to opt out of consumer culture completely, even if only for 24 hours. Like the millions of people who have done this fast before you, you may be rewarded with a life-changing epiphany. While you’re at it, what better time to point out real alternatives to unbridled consumption – and the climate uncertainty that it entails – by taking your BND spirit to the streets?

I decided to buy nothing the whole weekend of "Black Friday", and except for my newspaper subscription, I didn't! I had a nice Thansksgiving with family, then enjoyed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday watching Christmas movies and walking the dog. It was great. Consumerism has gotten out of hand. My next shopping trip? Either the thrift store or the 99 Cent Only, where I buy a lot of groceries. Thanks, Marieemma.

Ok I cracked. I bought Vegan stamps on Zazzle.com. They had a sale. Otherwise, I was a good girl. Kidding aside, this is a great idea and it's counter(shop)culture.

I haven't shopped on 'Black Friday' for 20-something years! I don't like to shop in the first place and I dang sure do not like to shop when a slavering herd of sale-seekers descend on a store like a plague! I have never 'enjoyed' shopping my entire life so skipping the thundering hordes on the day after Thankgiving has never inconvenienced me in the least. My life is filled with 'no shopping' days--not just the Black Fridays!

We of the female sex, Have a way now to get back your power.
This way is as it should be.
We the Mothers and Wives who do the shopping and run the homes must now get a balance back in your homes with economical ways. You will need the old bookes of reciepes that granny had. During the War days we were taught the skills of feeding the family on whatever we could get hold of. We were always there for are children. We gave them whatever we whanted to give them, they eat it without a grumble for what we fancy is what they will fancy. Never make the mistake of asking them what they want for dinner or you will make a big mistake. The kids would chose rubbish every time and they do not no what is good for them and have to be guided by you. Beleave me if they are hungry enough they will eat.
Let the Men in your life go out to there work, that's if they can find a job. But save yourself lots of money by cooking, sewing, kniting, and creating your homes. Let us all have the Sunday back as family time. Close the shops up for that day. Bring back the church Bells.
Let the churches open there doors. Let them feed the poor through the week with food donated by all who can share and take a leaf out of the ways of the other people on the Earth. This is good.
Our Fathers house should always have the doors open.
Always have a pantry stocked for a rainy day for there will be many coming. Blessings to you all but you realy must start looking after your baby's yourselves, this will save you so much, no child minder fees, no transport cost, all the lovely fresh meals you can prepare, and a time to teach the children how to behave. Bless you all, you can do it love from Janet. Thank you Father for all you have given Amen Janet.
