I don't take any form of anti-depressant. Things happen in life, at times we do get a little depressed, events happen to all of us. We can turn to friends, talk it out, if you're able. Or wait it out. Everything passes with time, even those things which seem devastating at the moment. We have to make the choice, believe a TV commercial, or passively accept a prescription without knowing what it might to you; or think for yourself. Some how the human race has managed to make it for many thousands of years with out having our brains numbed. For those who really need a drug for serious psychiatric problems, should be in a hospital with daily one-on-one discussions and personal help. Drugs mask symptoms.

We are fortunate to have drugs that numb serious pain, antibiotics to stop life threatening disease, but all of this has gone much too far.

This is episode 3, a short 10 minutes, of a documentary called 'Selling Sickness'.

You will see how normal hormonal changes in women have been made into a 'mental disorder' called 'Pre-menstrual dysphoric (means 'difficult to bear') disorder' by the field of Psychiatry and 500 billion dollars a year pharmaceutical companies called Big Pharma.

Vince Perry, a hugely successful advertising, marketing, and sales rep. for Big Pharma companies explains:

“Branding is about the ownership of ideas: giving customers a new way to think about things, and - in the process - transferring the values of this experience to a situation or commodity.
… within the pharmaceutical industry, marketing professionals have increasingly taken branding to the next level by branding the disease or condition that a particular product is capable of treating.

The idea behind "condition branding" is relatively simple: If you can define a particular condition and its associated symptoms in the minds of physicians and patients, you can also predicate the best treatment for that condition."

It must be Care2 Glitch Day. Kudos for all the glitches that make posting news stories a living hell. Is there a disorder for that?

Thirty years ago the head of one of the world’s best-known drug companies, Merck, made some over-candid comments. The aggressive chief executive, Henry Gadsden, who was close to retirement at the time, told Fortune magazine of his distress that Merck’s potential markets had been limited to sick people; he said he would have preferred Merck to be more like the chewing-gum manufacturer Wrigley, because then Merck would be able to “sell to everyone”; it had long been his dream to make drugs for healthy people. His dream has since come true.

The epicenter of this selling is the United States, home to many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. The US has less than 5% of the world’s population but represents almost 50% of the global market in prescription drugs.

FACT: There is absolutely no proof of any so-called 'chemical imbalance' or 'serotonin level' that has been shown scientifically or medically or biologically or physiologically to be the cause of any single 'mental disorder' in Psychiatry, by any test, brain scan, brain imaging etc, whatsoever.

It really is hard for many people to confront the idea that people out there who are saying they care deeply for "our" health and well being are actually trying to (and succeeding) convince the whole society we need to be medicated for life. Governments all over the world are buying this idea, throwing more and more money toward it and then taking no responsibilty for the outcomes.
In Australia prescription drugs can't be direct marketed to the public, but the "disorders" certainly are being. The government puts on ads telling us we all sufer from depression and anxiety (no I'm stressed out temporarily because of some unexpected turn in life, I'll get over it with some support, sleep, good nutrition, life skills and time) and that we should all go see our doctor. But please note the small print, we take no responsibility for this information or your well being in any other way. Aaargh!
It makes me so angry when I think of all the children they have poisoned, all the ones they desperately want to get their hands on. We haven't got a choice, we have to speak out. Talk to people, the next one you speak to may be just about to take psych drugs because they're sad. You really could save a life.

It was a sad day when drug companies were allowed to advertize. If you aren't sick to start with the drugs they try to push on you (for some of the most ridiculous conditions/syndromes I have ever heard of) will get you there. And of course there's another drug for the side effect of the first medicine...and by the time people are done they are taking 8-10 medications for a condition that could have been dealt with successfully without medicine.

Thanks Kenneth, They try and push these drugs on people and all of them have side effects that are worse then what you are taking a drug for.

It's so sad how many people look for reasons to believe they are sick when what they really need is companionship, dreams and hope. When drug companies play on people's negative emotions then they become part of a system that keeps people down instead of elevating them to their rightful place in society. It used to be 'bad' religion that did this, now it's pharmaceutical companies.

I agree with Kit, and many others here. What they have done is pathologize normal feelings - and now so many people believe if their not freaking happy all the time there must be something wrong with them.

People have different personalities. Some people have pain and need comfort. Instead they get labelled and medicated. Label jars, not people.

Thanks Kenneth. Listening to the possible side effects when they advertise their drugs is just frightening. Also, the information that comes out years later, how do they get away with that?

Life has its ups and downs, and if you can't handle it without taking pills then you really need to re-evaluate your attitude.

Some people NEED their pain and misery to validate their existence and earn them the sympathy they depend on to feed their dysfunction. They're the ones who depend on the pills and prefer that quick fix and the sympathy.... to actually FIXING the parts of their lives that don't work.

The more medication you take, the more you're cooking your own liver. Medications have side effects and most times, the side effects require other medications to mask them...and it creates a vicious cycle of dependence on medication...when in reality....an attitude adjustment would work much better.

Anti Depression pills or tricyclics are ruining people and messing with dopamine and serotonin levels and are way over prescribed...I know because I was prescribed these for pain...for pain!!...did he think it was all in my head?? True clinical depression can cause pain and discomfort due to stress and tension...but I was NOT depressed and was later diagnosed with spinal arthritis and degenerative disc disease. That being said....we the general population, have a responsibility to not fill these prescriptions and stop being guinea pigs. Speak up because Dr.'s have become robots for the pharmaceutical industry. Dr.'s are sworn to do no harm and it seems this message has become lost as drug peddlers drop into your Dr.'s office with the latest samples of the newest drugs...freshly approved by the FDA....to be passed onto you and later quite possibly, recalled after adverse side effects become evident.

Thank-you for posting this Kenneth. The pharmies need some BIG PILLS.

The drug lords need to immediately invest their massive accumulation of capital in "pharmaceutical treatments" for the "marketing mania" and "greed consumption ocd" epidemics that plague the planet [and THEY obviously suffer from.] Clinical trials can be conducted in-house, begin with the CEOs...quarantines would be good. With those diseases in remission--the population can proceed full-speed ahead to get plenty of fresh air outdoors, clean water, whole foods, excercise and rest for starters. So that we the people can figure out how to live in sync with the biosphere of the planet we happen to inhabit and depend on for our existence so we can go about the business of being real humans...

Thank you for your diligence in this area. Thankfully I'm on no medication, even the high blood pressure pills they wanted me to go on I said I'll take a more natural approach. With some meditation, a bit of diet change, a little more exercise my blood pressure is perfect now. I realize for some people certain medications are an absolute must, but one should try to look at themselves holistic and see if there are things they are doing that are causing a condition in their bodies.

Spot on Kenneth...Tis the society in which we live...Take the drug and ask no questions. You are not the person you once were when you began taking the drug. The drug changes you. You don't notice, but others see the difference in you. Good or bad, you are not the same!!!

Thanks Kenneth - how ridiculous to take drugs for PMS/PMT - that is an oestrogen/progesterone imbalance and can be cured by diet and/or specific vit/min pills (deficiencies in some things lead to PMS) and or herbs for emergencies - and once one is on an even keel again diet can cure a LOT of things without having to go to expensive drugs for 'cures' that aren't cures and have horrid side effects.

As many others have said - we should take more responsibility for our health and not take tablets like sheep.
