A consortium including the Morongo Band of Mission Indians and the Commerce Casino plans to take the idea to the state Legislature next month. The two would be among the gambling interests seeking to operate poker websites if the proposal were approved.Approval could mean up to $250 million a year for California coffers, but it's far from a sure bet.

I've always felt that if gamblers want to contribute to public finances by blowing their money in this way, more power to them. Maybe they can lower the taxes on the rest of us. I was in favor of the Florida Lottery for the same reason, knowing I would never buy a lottery ticket. Of course, I never believed the silly promises about them using the proceeds to "enhance education", but at least it goes into the general treasury.
