Washington (CNN) -- Use of capital punishment by states continues its steady decline, with fewer death sentences handed down in 2009 than any year since the death penalty was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 1976.

well Thank God! DNA is proving many innocent, some of them on are on death row waiting to have convictions over turned. so glad we have this at our disposal, horrilbe to murder the wrong person, and also know the guilty is out there free.
