Great, let start teaching them to kill really young!! OMG! What's next, killing stray cats for fun and entertainment? :( What about teaching kids compassion for animals rather then disregard for life for a change?!

I cant understand what sort of a "teacher" this person is to teach these kids to KILL is FUN - it's digusting, appalling and barbaric. Teaching them an historic way of life I can understand, but the original hunters weren't killing for FUN - they were killing for food and for their basic survival - not for FUN!

Justification of violence and step by step directions on how to violently
kill, being taught to children?.. sounds like what terrorists are teaching children elsewhere.

I am just wondering if these kids are Eskimos... & if they are being taught there way of life.. we can condem them but remember that the Native Americans used to teach there males how to hunt also.. so is this a teaching or is it kids killing for the fun of it ???? there is a difference here... sorry .. I can't condem them if its there way of life & what they have to know... I have an opened mind..theres a difference to what the Seal Hunters are doing & what these kids are doing I feel.. disgusting or not

Sometimes as time goes on, our ways of life has to change, just like cultural things have changed for all kinds of people. Just like killing of the whales, it must change but there are those who think it should go on for tradition and then tradition becomes commercial.

It's the same in Japan, hoards of school children taken to watch whales and dolphins butchered as a 'lesson', they're just conditioning these kids into accepting the brutal slaughter, securing the next generation of hunters with naive and impressionable young minds.

Is the "cruel gene" genetic? Brainwashing young human children to kill seal pups? This MUST be a horror story!

Absolutely disgusting and sick!!! Then people wonder why kids are violent!

I read this and even though I support Native Cultures on many things, this teaches the wrong thing. Killilng an innocent creature is not something to teach. Yet many indigenous cultures do this, and some of it is definitely not pretty in our eyes. Again, this is not the thing to teach, yet when we try to tell them our ways that doesn't go over either. Tough Call.

I support native cultures as well. But why is killing always the thing that is touted as tradition? Is it a right of passage thing? Is it connected to their religion or spiritual belief? Spirituality is always connected to learning how to love and to have compassion and killing has nothing to do with that. Dealing with such sensitives issues takes alot of compassion and diplomacy. No one can tell another group of people what to do as their is no respect in that at all. There is also NO respect in killing like this. For fun? That has nothing to do with tradition of any kind.

"The exercise, which was funded by the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, was a way to bring the class's current unit on Inuit Studies alive, according to their teacher.

'It was a learning experience, and for me too," Qamanirq said. "Even though we didn't catch any, it was still well worth going out.'"

It was also a way to keep kids growing into the seal pup killing industry, and keeping it ok with them. It was fun used as propaganda.

I beleive we as a Native American should learn but not actually do the kill...It is thier history yes but dont kill...I dont condone the killing part at all and never will, but it is thier culture and they do have a right to at least learn about it, but this man taking them out to actually do it is soooooooooooooooooooo wrong....

I don't know if anyone read the article but how did you take the words about having fun and twist it to make it sound like they had fun killing seals when in fact they didn't even kill one.

It's when ARA ventures into native territory that alarms sound off, my wife is Inuit and I am Metis, and all we see are people with a "white" paint brush.

Jodi S B. (70)

No they had fun learning about killing and if they could have, they would have. No twisting that I see.

Helen Forsythe (89)

Actually the article refers to them as 'baby seal hunters'.

Hunting is killing no ? I'm sure if they HAD managed to kill a pup they would've been celebrating the unnecessary death of an innocent animal, which is wrong. These kids should be taught how to respect nature and appreciate it's beauty, not learning how to destroy it.

And what is your opinion about the sealhunt Dave ?
Do you think it's a good thing? Or do you think the sealhunt should be stopped?

Dave Seal (23)
Monday May 19, 2008, 4:17 am
HSUS and IFAW are making lots of money off the sealhunt. The commercial hunt is only part of the protest. The real victory will be when native and other people who have used seal meat as a big part of their diet will be denied it. Am I wrong? Is that not what people in above postings are implying?

There are plenty of other foods out there besides seal meat. Eating seal is not needed in order to stay healthy. The comment about handing out blankets is so inappropriate. Killing any animal is a tradition that humans can grow beyond doing any more. It is just not needed in order to survive and has nothing to do with spirituality, so it should end.

So what should the Inuit eat? Beef? Pork? Poultry? They've been eating seal for thousands of years and are the only people in the world who can live on meat and meat only. Now there's a target on their backs.

Helen Forsythe (89)

What would they eat if there were no seals to kill ?!
