Just got this from my friend (((((Carole)))))...from the excitement, I missed the rest of the article's title w/c was so fitting:

MAGGIE, "COME ON DOWN"

A famous animal lover is coming to Alaska.
Former host of the Price is Right, Bob Barker, will be in Anchorage on Monday to talk about Maggie, the zoo's lone elephant.

Barker is being sponsored by a California elephant sanctuary called PAWS, who would like Maggie to "come on down" to their facility.

PAWS has also offered to pick up the tab for Maggie's move. They've invited Alaska Zoo officials to a meeting on Monday. You can count on CBS 11 News to be there as well.

To contact the Newsroom, call 907-273-3186.

Another news from Anchorage Daily News:
http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/ap_alaska/story/9248514p-9163512c.html

"Calif. facility offers to take, and pay, for Maggie"

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A proposal is on the table to get Alaska's only elephant out of the state, and for the first time this summer the Alaska Zoo and animal rights groups could have something to agree on.

The Performing Animal Welfare Society, located in Galt, Calif., has offered to take Maggie and pay for her relocation costs, including air transportation, veterinary evaluations and professional training to prepare her for crate travel, zoo officials said Friday.

The facility would also pay for Maggie's keepers to travel with her to her prospective new home - 30 acres where she would live with nine other elephants. PAWS has also offered to fund a $100,000 grant for animal habitat improvements at the Alaska Zoo if an agreement is reached to relocate Maggie to its facility.

"It's a very generous offer from them, but our main concern is finding the best place for Maggie," said Alaska Zoo director Pat Lampi. "PAWS is a well-known facility and they do a lot of good work."

The costs of flying the 8,000-lb. beast are a significant obstacle, with some estimates approaching $200,000, Lampi said.

He said Friday that PAWS is "on the short list" but officials from another facility are also coming up soon to take a look at Maggie. That will be the last group, he said, and the board should be able to make a decision shortly afterward.

Alaska Zoo officials are already planning to meet with the PAWS officials, including longtime donor Bob Barker, former host of "The Price is Right."

"We have been in contact with PAWS for months now, we respect this as a viable option for Maggie and will give it full consideration when we make our decision," Dick Thwaites, zoo board president, said in a statement.

Thwaites said the decision isn't made yet, and other facilities that are "as well suited or perhaps better" are still being considered. The decision should be made in a matter of weeks, he said.

Elephants of Africa Rescue Society in Salinas, Calif., is another top facility being considered, Lampi said.

Critics blasted that location earlier this week, saying it practiced inhumane training methods and exploited its animals.

But Catherine Doyle, campaign director for the San Rafael, Calif.-based In Defense of Animals, told The Associated Press Tuesday that PAWS would be one of the group's top picks for Maggie's new home.

Zoo officials have said they are considering three backup locations as well, and officials from at least one of the facilities have suggested Maggie stay in Alaska through the winter.

In May, calls for her departure intensified after Maggie fell twice and needed to be hoisted to her feet by fire crews. Lampi said she may have been suffering from a bought of colic.

THE ZOO BOARD WOULD RATHER SEND MAGGIE TO THE CIRCUS OR ANYWHERE BUT A SANCTUARY. THEY HATE THE ACTIVISTS SO MUCH THAT THEY WOULD RATHER CUT THEIR NOSES TO SPITE THEIR FACES. HEARTLESS BEASTS!!

Sorry, I dind't realize that was an 'unverified' list of vegetarians.

Here's an article from 2003 where he mentioned he is one:
http://www.sptimes.com/2003/12/09/Floridian/At_80__Bob_Barker_is_.shtml

"..I'm a vegetarian - I think there's a strong possibility, had I not become a vegetarian, I would not be working now. I became a vegetarian about 25 years ago, and I did it out of concern for animals. But I immediately began having more energy and feeling better."

The offer from both PAWS and TES has always been all-expenses-paid. Yet, this nasty zoo board is still aiming at EARS. Lets go back and compare PAWS sanctuary and EARS:

http://www.helpelephants.com/alaska_support1.html

The $100K grant offer from PAWS is new. So I'm hoping that they are the greedy bastards I've come to know and that this is the end icing on the cake...should be enough to buy their hate for the activists. Plus, it wouldn't hurt if these icicle hick board get star struck. I'm crossing my fingers and toes till Monday!

I hope the fact a celebrity is actually going up there has some impact on those idiot board members and zoo owners. I can't believe that one official from a top group of sites being considered to take Maggie actually suggested Maggie stay in Alaska for the winter. And I hope you're right Nadia, about them being so greedy that the grant might influence them, because talk about great site and all expenses paid, whatever happened to TES' proposal?

This is great news! With Bob Barker's support and the expenses of relocating Maggie to be funded by PAWS, think there is a good chance they will release her to go to PAWS sanctuary instead of a questionable place. Whoo-pee, lets keep our fingers crossed this will work out for Maggie!

Maggie's face in the first picture actually looks like she has a great big smile and is really pleased! That is so cool! For those that may not be aware of it, Bob and his wife had no 2 legged kids, and his wife died sometime ago. Bob has left his entire fortune to the animals! I don't recall how much it was but it was considerable! A lot of animals will have a much better chance of suvival and happiness because of his actions!
The bitch that owns the zoo will probably bubble and coo the entire time she is near him! He seems to have that effect on women, maybe thats what she was holding out for, to meet Bob Barker in person!
God bless him for his actions and love of the animals.
Thomas R, there are a number of other entertainers who are active in animal rescues and care, but I seriously doubt that they are in the exceptional position that Bob is. Linda Blair, Betty White, Doris Day, just to name a few that come to mind right away, are all animal activists. Oh yeah, we can't forget Bill Mahar, who stated on "Larry King Live" that he is a member of the board of PETA! They all do what they can with what they have to work with. The last I heard, Linda Blair was attempting to move to a larger compound to beable to help more animals. The spiritualist James Van Praagh, in the middle of an interview with her, told her to count on him for support in doing so. They really are out there doing their thing to help as best they can.

Well he made it up here, saw Maggie and has offered to donate an additional quarter million to help PAWS relocate her. The Zoo board is still waiting to meet with one more option but will make a disition shortly their after based on what is best for Maggie. I live in Anchorage and will be sad to see her go but understand the need for her to be in a warmer climate with companions. As for the Zoo board I understand their reasons and disissions so far, some "activists" have said some pretty nasty things and to act like the people at the zoo don't care about Maggie offends me. My Neihbor has worked at the Zoo for years mostly with the wolves and birds of prey but with Maggie as well and has explained to me that the situation and dissisions that needs to be made are not as simple as the "activists" make them sound. I do hope she is happy and comfertable were ever she ends up, and thank you Bob for being so generouse and caring, the fact is the zoo couldn't afford to move her on there own its about time a real activist stepped up to the plate and put their money were their mouth is!

Hey Melissa,

How about you check out facts before you start accusing this hard working, big hearted and self sacrificing individual of NOT giving.
So you live in Anchorage. Big deal I livd in Alaska too, and I can tell you that if you had bothered to give a damn about any issue before you attack you would have checked out facts before spouting misinformed garbage.
If you don't like the activisim that that this whole Network is about then why are you here? That's exactly why we are here.
As for your friend, perhpas your friend needs to be "INFORMED" you start taking second hand info from someone who HAS NOT fought so hard for the protection of Maggie.
There are links all over this Network with information on Maggie, and what has been fought for on "HER" behalf. Do you even check anything out? I doubt it.
Offends you? Offends you?
Check out the neglect and failure of the zoo before you make that accusation. Your neighbor needs to be informed, and so do you.

I quote the following (Lampi's words), "The costs of flying the 8,000-lb. beast are a significant obstacle, with some estimates approaching $200,000, Lampi said."
Unquote:
I would NOT call an elephant a beast!!! Elephants are majestic beings, far, far away from any traits or qualities of a beast!! They are vegetarians, and possess noble character! Beast is not the right description of a majestic elephant!!!

PEACE BE TO YOU (134)
