Please Take Action to oppose the NMFS proposal today. Note that the public comment period closes on Tuesday, February 19th.

California Sea Lions Face Lethal Removal in Pacific Northwest

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has proposed a plan that would allow Washington and Oregon to kill (by lethal injection or shooting) as many as 85 California sea lions each year at the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River, ostensibly to prevent the disappearance of wild salmon from the region. However, this approach is fundamentally flawed for a number of reasons, the main one being that sea lions are only responsible for eating between 2 and 4 percent of the salmon runs. Meanwhile the dam itself kills 2-16 percent of the adult fish, and "harvest" by fishermen is allowed at levels between 4-17 percent each year, so killing sea lions will do virtually nothing to help salmon populations recover.

Meanwhile, habitat degradation and threats to the survival of juvenile fish are the two greatest problems facing the salmon, neither of which will be solved by killing sea lions. In fact, the NMFS has presented no evidence that killing sea lions will do anything to save the fish, admitting in their Environmental Assessment that they cannot project "a reliable estimate of any decrease in pinniped predation and corresponding increase in salmonid survival."

Rather than offering a legitimate program of action based on scientific study that will actually save the salmon, the NMFS preferred plan to kill sea lions will do little more than allow fishermen to vent their frustration at seeing fish being eaten. Perhaps even more damaging to the conservation cause, it will give the public the impression that something is being done about saving the salmon while in reality their very survival remains at stake.

As a lifelong resident of California, I have seen these magnificent creatures up close, many times. These are peaceful, non aggressive mammals who live in family groups and nurse and nurture their young. Killing them would be a crime and IS when it's not the government doing it! Please sign and fwd this action! This MUST NOT be allowed to happen.

"Each time we walk out of our front door, we are in another animal’s home. We need to pause. Imagining the world through their eyes, their ears and their noses. And we need to walk softly, taking care in not to crush our shared earth with each and every step. Being compassionate isn't scientific, but it is our responsibility and opportunity to make the earth a more humane place, for all creatures, great and small."

Draft EA on States’ Request for MMPA Section 120 Authorization

On Jan. 17, 2008, NOAA Fisheries Service released its draft environmental assessment (EA) on three states’ Marine Mammal Protection Act request for authority to lethally remove California sea lions. Washington, Oregon and Idaho believe that sea lions are having a significant negative impact on recovery of Endangered Species Act-listed salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River basin. Early last year we published a Federal Register notice requesting public comment on the states' application, and received almost 300 comments and 30 nominations to serve on a Pinniped-Fishery Interaction Task Force. We appointed a task force of 18 people with a wide range of experience and views to consider the states’ application and public comments, and make recommendations to us. The task force held three public meetings, and provided its recommendation to us in November.

All except one of the task force members recommended that the agency approve the states’ request for authority to “lethally remove” certain California sea lions at Bonneville Dam. We asked the Marine Mammal Commission (MMC) to review the task force report, and it provided comments. We considered public comments, the task force recommendations, and MMC information and comments while preparing the draft EA. Following a one-month comment period on this draft, we expect to make a final decision on the states’ request in late March 2008.

NOAA will consider all substantive comments received by 5 p.m. (PST) on Feb. 19, 2008. You may submit comments by e-mail. See the Federal Register notice, below, for more information; or contact Garth Griffin, 503-231-2005.

Jane Velez-Mitchell, of the show ISSUES WITH JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL on HLN (Headline News channel) will be covering the sea lions story either this Friday, May 28th or the next Friday, depending on another developing story.......... Jane's show airs from 7 to 8pm Eastern time on HLN. A clip of the segment will also end up on her show's web page a day or two after the airing ( , look under MAN VS NATURE section on the right side of the page). I will try to post here again when I confirm the actual date of the story.................I suggested the story to Jane and researched it for her, in conjunction with In Defense of Animals and the Sea Lion Defense Brigade............
