As a person who drives a Porsche and doesn't even get half an hour on Highway 1 each year, I'm obviously sympathetic to this view. But I still think it's mistaken. Let me count the reasons:

Very interesting. Actually we in Berlin have also one of those self driving cars on test, it was recently introduced by Richard Quest on his show(CNN) And for owning cars, the author is correct in assuming it's a generational thing, I too believe the coming youth generations won't fancy cars as much as in the past.
True, quite silly to buy our cars for US use when you have no way of speeding over there.(Here only portions of our autobahns have a speed limit to 130km/h.
Bikes have become more and more popular here, wish they would also in the US
