Some things were good, most were bad, but all had one thing in common: They were sweeping generalizations - overarching assumptions that ascribe a specific set of characteristics to all people of a certain culture. Otherwise known as stereotypes.

Dare we say that all people from any group are just people. There will be some "bad apples" in the batch, that has nothing to do ancestry, it has everything to do with being human. I really hope that most of these stereo types have gone the way of the Do-Do bird. Extinct.

Great article. I have always been interested in Native American culture and history (despite not having a drop of Native American blood in me). I am a big advocate for treating Native Americans fairly and with dignity. They have been receiving the short end of the stick for far too long.

To move beyond stereotypes, first we have to understand them.

There are good and bad in every group, wise and fools, tree huggers and environmental wastrels, Native Americans are no different in this regard.

I really appreciate that you placed this on here. Sterotyping serves no positive purpose. I agree Kit wish it had gone the way of the do-do bird.

Why should it matter if you are White, Black, Asian, American Indian, Australian, Eastern Indian, Egyptian or even Martian for that matter, what is important is our kindness for each other, for we are ALL equal under the sun!

Compartmentalizing races and peoples is an excellent way to stay ignorant and keep a distance from other human beings. If we are to grow we must accept and embrace diversity. Stereotypes can be found in every culture. It is up to each of us to recognize that and fight against it. Thank you JL Noted.

I believe that one of the biggest offenders of stereotyping is the film making industry - Television has an extremely huge impact on a lot of people and some people unfortunately have difficulty separating what's real and what's not.
