School snacks and drinks across the country are about to get healthier — because of people like YOU.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday unveiled the interim final rule establishing national nutrition guidelines for foods and drinks sold in schools outside of meals. Set to be implemented by fall 2014, these guidelines ensure that schools nationwide offer healthier items to students.

This is a victory for children and teenagers everywhere, and it couldn’t have happened without YOU. You were one of the nearly 250,000 people earlier this year who wrote to the USDA in support of the proposed guidelines. Because of people like you, the USDA knows how important these guidelines are to kids’ health.

But our work isn’t done yet. Now the hard work of implementing the guidelines across the country begins. You can help by checking out some of the resources offered by our friends at the Kids’ Safe & Healthful Foods Project.

Thank you again for raising your voice. This is a great moment for all of us working to build a healthier future for America’s young people.

Sincerely,

Marty Kearns

Also from this site: Updated standards are what Americans want. A recent poll commissioned by the project showed that 80 percent of American voters favor national nutrition standards that would limit calories, fat and sodium in snack and a la carte foods sold in U.S. schools and encourage the consumption of fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy items.

I think it's about time.

In today's NY Times, Science Section, there is an article about how school foods have become so much healthier, that kids are gaining excess pounds during their summer breaks, rather than during the school years.

Excellent news. I received it in my email this morning and I had to give the USDA some kudos for being effective at something worthy. Thanks JL

This is good news. My granddaughter's school district has already made big adjustments toward whole foods, and away from sugar and junk foods. When her mom, my daughter, attended school in that district, they had a contract with Pepsi, and they had soda and junk foods in vending machines. They did not allow anyone to bring Coca-Cola products into the schools at all! This was a lucrative arrangement for the school. Thanks, J.L.

"For the first time in more than 30 years, the U.S Department of Agriculture is updating nutrition standards for snack foods and beverages sold in schools. This proposed rule complements USDA’s standards for school meals, which took effect this school year".

It took more then 30 years. :/
