Congress has headed home for its August recess. They left with sequestration cuts still in place and more looming if they don't take action to end them. But there are gaping divisions among members of Congress.

Sequester Impacts: July 27 through August 1

Congress has gone home for its August recess. We hope you will look for forums your representative or senators may be holding near you, and you will attend and urge them to stop sequestration because it is harming people and communities, in your district, state, and nation. If they are not holding forums near you, you should still contact them - tell them to stop the sequester cuts, and to protect SNAP/food stamps and other vital safety net programs that some in Congress want to slash. Here's an email you can send them during the recess.

Our most recent report of sequester impacts includes two surveys. One, conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, sought responses from direct service providers in New England only a month after sequestration started. The three biggest challenges facing low-income communities they reported were jobs (63 percent); affordable housing (41 percent); and sequestration/federal budget cuts (36 percent). And a poll by NBC News/Wall Street Journal found that the proportion of people saying they were "significantly affected" by sequestration cuts is rising. Unsurprisingly, people earning less than $30,000 are hit hardest - now 31 percent are affected, up from 24 percent in April.

You'll also read more about Head Start cuts (Massachusetts will lose 1,580 of 13,000 Head Start placements), and housing cuts (Cumberland County, PA expects 150-200 households will lose housing assistance). You'll also see several reports of severe cuts to public defenders programs.

As the specific information about these cuts is getting out, some in Congress are getting cold feet about continuing or deepening them. That's good. The House Appropriations Committee Chair Harold Rogers (R-KY) voiced his frustration when the Transportation-Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill had to be pulled from the House floor for lack of votes: “With this action, the House has declined to proceed on the implementation of the very budget it adopted just three months ago. Thus, I believe that the House has made its choice: Sequestration — and its unrealistic and ill-conceived discretionary cuts — must be brought to an end,” Rogers said. The House bill had nearly $10 billion less in it than the Senate version. But what's not so good is that Chairman Rogers sees entitlement cuts (Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, Social Security...) as the alternative. That's why sending the suggested email would be a good idea - tell your rep. and senators these cuts must be stopped.

On Tuesday, you will receive CHN's recess edition Human Needs Report, and soon, more information about ways to make sure Congress knows that constituents want them to stop the cuts and start investing in jobs and economic security for all.

Signed and sent to Lankford, Inhofe and the other idiot from Oklahoma! Just wish they would listen!! Knowing them, they won't! They love to see how far they can go to hurt people who don't have money to donate to them, as if I ever would!

$1.40 per person per meal and they want to cut that. Each time I go to the grocery store I see the prices on food rising all the time.

All they do is go on vacation and when they are there they are not helping anyone except the Plutocrats if they do anything at all. I've read that they spend 70% of their time gathering donations for their next election, so little time is given to real problems facing so many of us. Then when they do address something, like SNAP it is to make it worse for the people.

As the squeeze becomes deeper and longer and when people can't eat and look at their children crying from lack of food. I'm reading that women are having a hard time buying diapers, leaving them on longer and babies are getting more urinary tract infections and diaper rash. Some have tried to purchase cloth diapers only to be told they can't wash them in the laundromats. Our homeless population is growing all the time, our woods are full, and there is special forms now for enrollment of homeless children.

Yes, go on vacation you rich useless so called Leaders. Leading us to what? Our demise, the destruction of our Country. Climb in bed with your Corporate over lords, go sit and drink champagne together, round of golf while children weep and parents struggle.

I'd shout from the rooftops if I thought it would do any good and I'm terrified of heights. I gave a speech last Saturday night to a group of a bit over 45 people. All I can do is hope a few more opened their ears and will begin to listen to their hearts and get those feet moving, pens writing, keyboard typing, phone call making, tell others, make signs and rise up.

Rise Up!

Noted & Signed! How do these politicians get elected? Is it the false promises they make or their ability to undermine the other guy? Or, is it that the voters fall victims to the false ads on TV? Voters have to become their own investigators before they cast their ballots.

Gladly signed and noted...can't currently send a star to JL.

Marilyn, they get elected and reelected because people are looking for change - that said, they lie through theiri collective teeth, to anyone and everyone, They're equal opportunity liars. The latest is they are asking for donations to help with legal fees to defend one of their pet newsletters, Public Advocate, from "Liberal attacks and lie"s...My mother, at it again, signed me up for this GOP/TP tripe. Getting real old here.

I feel for you GGma, I think we all have at least one family member that is still buying into the GOP/TP crap even if it's hurting them personally. I suppose on the bright side, you get to know what crap they are dishing.

Government agencies always have press monitoring--including advocacy group sources since one often learns of potential or actual issues first from unofficial sources. Politically engaged persons and entities do likewise--which does indeed give warning Dandelion to "crap" that might hit the news.
