Let's shift gears

Does California's criminal justice system keep communities safe, treat people fairly, and use our taxpayer dollars wisely?

Take our new quiz you might be surprised by what you learn.

In the final hour of this year's legislative session, Gov. Brown approved an extra $700 million to be spent on private prisons over the next two years. He also vetoed a modest bill that would have allowed for discretion in drug sentencing (SB 649).

But in his veto message, he promised to further examine our criminal justice system next year. Let's hold him to that promise.

"We cannot continue to pour more and more dollars into the rat hole of incarceration," he said at a press conference last year. "If anybody's got better ideas, I'll look at them." Gov. Brown, we've got better ideas.

It's time to shift gears on criminal justice.

This is our year to begin that dialogue with Gov. Brown. Go take our quiz! At the end, you can demand that Gov. Brown make smart policy decisions that help reduce the state's reliance on incarceration.

This quiz was only 4 questions and very fast. Sad to say as a Californian I got all of them right and it is a sad state of affairs. Privatizing prisons in just another capitalist grab for the money and power. Prisons should never be privatized EVER. TY JL Noted

Thanks JL for the link. Got all four questions right. This Quiz, though short, points out the sad state of affairs on this issue in California but probably other states as well. Read and noted.

Took the quiz, got them all correct. Simple drug possession should be changed so that it's not a lifetime anchor on a convicted felon. Our politicians do worse by attempting to privatize prisons, and spending 700 million to do so. Thanks, JL for this.

Not limited to California certainly, but heartbreaking wherever. I do not now lie n California, but I am a native Californian, and I do notice when Gov. Browns name comes up in petitions, as it has lately all too much. To push this through I used an address which is no longer current so I could add this paragraph:

'In 1992, then living in Colorado, my husband and I were delegates - delegates for you, for your Presidential bid - to the State Democratic Convention. After a couple of votes, we were pressured to change our allegiance to Bill Clinton so the State Democrats would be in unanimity. We resisted, and in fact never did so. Lately, as California's Governor, you have done and have said some things that make us wonder why we bothered. Building private prisons? Vetoing drug sentencing reform? Allowing and encouraging fracking? To name only a few. We want the Jerry Brown back that we supported then."

Sometimes one just has to speak.

California is very lacking in the justice department. For those of you that can look into the case of Christy Phillips, who at the age of just turning 15 called 911 to report a crime ended up being interrogated all night. She asked to call her mother and was denied.. Finally, they told her if she signed a paper ( confession) that they would call her mother to come down. She is now serving two life sentences for the crime, which was the murder of an elderly woman. Do a search for a case or Free Christy Phillps on face book. Thanks, I have been an advocate of hers and a friend for years.
