California Public Utilities Commissioners voted today to bury their heads in the sand regarding cell phone privacy.

The Commission voted 3-2 to reject a petition from CFC, TURN and Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, asking for a thorough review of cell phone privacy concerns. We thank Commissioners Catherine Sandoval and Mike Florio who voted to develop rules for cell phone privacy.

Join us in placing privacy protection on the ballot.

When the PUC established telecom privacy rules in 1986, smart phones didn’t exist. Today, over one hundred million phones sold by Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and others are embedded with software that collects customer address books, web searches, text message content and other data - without our knowledge or consent. The PUC and the majoritiy of lawmakers have shown no desire to tackle corporate privacy abuses.

That leaves it up to us – the people – to protect our own privacy. CFC is formulating a privacy ballot initiative with tough financial penalties for corporate misdeeds.

Please join us in support of a strong privacy ballot initiative.

Thank you for your support.

I really appreciate all of you helping CA on this one--it could become a model for the nation once we have a functioning Congress.

Signed and noted. And getting California to move the other way is VERY important, because often what starts there rapidly mushrooms out to other states. Of course the legislators played Ostrich -- where do you think they get huge campaign contributions?
