I guess this begs to ask the question... Do we really think that we can contiue to burn fossil fuels without drastic consequences for this planet we can home?

Thank you EJKV, for the story! Noted!

Interesting comments and ideas. I'm with Melissa. Even if there are sufficient fossil fuels to sustain us, do we want to continue using them?
Let's spend our money researching and implementing alternate energy sources. Thanks Evert!

Just one more question... he talks alot about the north slope in Alaska.. He isn't proposing drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge, is he?

well, let's assume there is enough oil for 200 years, after we finished with that -- then what.? Time for change now. We need to stop the cycle now and go for alernative energy sources..

Drilling anywhere causes huge environmental damage.

Before anyone thinks of touching Alaska or anything else, we need to grow up and quit driving gas hogs and quit buying so much stuff, because if we buy less stuff we don't have all the trucks guzzling the gas and if we drive smaller vehicles we use less gas.

Plus gas powered weed eaters and leaf blowers are 100% unnecessary.

So are jet skis, most all snowmobiles, quadrunners and dirt bikes.

All those toys are not reason enough to destroy even more ecosystems.

We need to grow up and not buy so many useless toys and garbage!

He really wants to drill in Alaska. The melting poles could also store a lot of oil, but if you see the relation between oil use and population growth over the world, would it be a good plan to give the people unlimited acces to energy before they are wise enough to use it in a sustainable manner? What about other peaking resources like rare metals needed to build our still exponnentialy growing world?

I do belief in peak oil, peak resources and peak water, but I also belief that information about it gets distorted and used against the people to scare them and make them dependant on the big and mighty rulers of the universe (that's perhaps how they see themselves).

The US was the biggest oil producer until the seventies when it peaked. That's when the world became dependant on Arab oil. Why become dependant on Arab oil (not exactly the best and most dependable friend you would want to have as a democratic free nation)?

My guess is that oil companies bombard the net with all kinds of distorted info to pressure Governments into opening up these environmental jewels to supposedly solve a long term problem in a short term way.

There is enough clean energy to go around and every attempt to get to it, is obstructed by oil companies, Opec and people who proffit from creating problems that need expensive sollutions.

The first cars were electric, or run on hemp, and gasoline was just a stinking alternative.
Oil companies created their own monopolies and it is time to break them down and energise the people in a clean and healthy way.

The North Slope is a region found in the far north of Alaska, bordered by the foothills of the Brooks Range to the south and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The region encompasses 89,000 square miles, comprised of diverse and unique ecosystems.

The North Slope contains the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge supports a greater variety of plant and animal life than any other protected area in the Arctic Circle. A continuum of six different ecozones spans some 200 miles (300 km) north to south. Eight million acres of the refuge are designated as Wilderness Area.

The question of whether or not to allow drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) has been a political football for every sitting American president since Jimmy Carter.

We cannot continue damaging our environment due to our reliance on fossil fuels and we cannot continue making war on other nations in order to take theirs and it is past time to find alternatives that are environmentally safe and don't starve other nations.

In the 1990s and 2000s, votes about the status of the refuge occurred repeatedly in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, but as of 2007 efforts to allow drilling have always been ultimately thwarted by filibusters, amendments, or vetoes.

Thank you Evert Jan, Paul Harvey is always a good listen.

Do you really beleive that the oil resources in Alaska and everywhere else will not eventually be exploited ?
Either the USA will exploit them in order to stay more powerful for a bit longer or the USA will be unable to prevent someone else from doing so.

What the is the actual issue?
Governments try to tell us, there is almost no more oil, and gas.
Therefore the prices are flying high.
On the other hand, we are told not to use fossile fuel, to save the environment, and prevent global warming.
Alternative energy inventors are kept from exploiting their inventions, not to have free energy, since nothing will be earned.
In other words, the whole monetairy system is built on EXPENSIVE oil, and agreements, made years ago.
As you can hear in the video, the USA will prevent drilling oil and gas in Alaska, to prevent the collapse of the dollar.
Therefore the USA government wants war in Iran, and Iraq, cause they didn't sign the contracts, the other oil-producing countries did.
It has all to do with state depts, and big money.
In fact the big and cheap oil reserve in Alaska is not the issue at all, but all that comes to it.
As told in the video (and I believe that too) they will never ever use that oil and gas, since it is too cheap to produce, and breaking all current contracts with other oil-producing countries.

thanks for the info,evert... i agree that we need to stop using fossil fuels and spend more time and energy researching and developing alternative forms of energy... we also need to preserve what precious wildlife ecosystems we have, but a very relevant point to be taken into consideration here is the fact that we(USA)has been in bed with and at war with countries that have been charging us outrageous amounts of money for oil, we have shut down our own refineries and the question is WHY has this been done?... i think this is the point that is trying to be made by evert's posting... i could be off the mark... if i am, evert will let me know, i am sure...:)

Tnx for your comment Christine.
You're almost right, since the oil producing countries charge about $10 a barrel (or what was it exactly, according to the video). The oil from Alaska costs about $3 a barrel I thought. So that's not the point either.
It's the government (Kissinger) that made agreements with the oil producing countries to pay for an Amarican dept, and for each barrel it produces, and the agreement to pay in dollars. The oil companies make profit, but the governments, and the bankers make much more profit on each barrel (now a barrel costs about $100, so where does all the money in between go?
Wars, bankers, the government, etc. You and I, we all pay for that.
Therefore they will not use the oil for Alaska, although it's cheaper.

Alternatives are free energy, which will not be used either, due to the same reason, but it's already there, and some are even being used in other countries, see the following links:

Your conspiracy theories have neither head nor tail.

1. Currently there are lots of individuals on care2 who oppose drilling for oil in Alaska in order to protect the environment - against the wishes of the evil corrupt governemt that wants to let the oil companies exploit the Alaskan oild no matter the environmental impact.
Now you claim the oil will not be exploitet to keep the price artificially high - ok you agree that the government is evil, but both parties can't be right.

2. Its patently absurd that all sorts of technologies freeing us from the dependance on fossil fuels exits, but are kept secret by the evil government - there is no such thing as free energy. There are lots of different publically well known technologises, that are simply not used because they are not mature yet, much more costly than fossil fuels, have their own undesired (real or imagined) environmental impacts or really don't exits (e.g. the water fueled car hoax).

3. Going to war against Iraq over oil would be rather idiotic given that it could have been achieved at much less cost (money, human life, political goodwill etc.) by simply bribing Sadam.

Please be more creative when inventing your conspiracy theories in the future - this one requires a total lack of understanding of science and economics to follow and is IMHO neither intersting nor fun.

Actually they have been able to drill for oil in Norway without environmental damage and they aren't reliant on the Middle East for anything....just food for thought...perhaps we should learn how they are doing this,
