Is Obama up to one of the biggest issues of his political career? Put it this way; if he cannot make any inroads in controlling guns in this country, this failure will be added to his diplomatic, and social ones.

This should not be so damn difficult. We just all want responsible gun ownership with proper background checks, training, proper safe storage and no assault weapons. The NRA has FAILED at this and the bright people in congress now HAVE to IGNORE the NRA lobby and get this DONE!

Signed. But until there is a major swelling of the people to push those we elected to become more afraid of us NOT to elect them, rather than the NRA and fearing they will loose their jobs if they stand up against the NRA, little will be done.

Noted, and signed...It just disturbs me, that so many of our Elected Officials are bought and paid for by the NRA, I just don't see them acting in the best interests of all of us...We aren't lining the pockets of the Politicians with cash, and trips, and all the other goodies the NRA give them, to do their bidding...This is onetime, I wish I am wrong however...

Why do people think the President can do it alone? Dandelion is right! We have to petition, picket, write letters, make phone calls --in other words-- make a whole lot of noise! We need the cooperation of both the Republican and Democratic members of Congress. Unfortunately, they are afraid to go up against powerful gun lobbies and/or lose their financial support. We have to make our elected officials afraid to go up against us! We're the voters, and they can't get into office without us. We don't have to take guns away from responsible gun owners; we just need to enforce some sensible regulations at the federal level. What average person needs a semi-automatic weapon with high a capacity magazine? Unless you're in the military or in law enforcement, you don't. Period. They're designed to kill a lot of people in a very short period of time. And that's what Adam Lanza accomplished with just a portion of the arsenal of weapons legally obtained by his mother. This has to stop!

Anyone who watched the coverage of this tragic incident has seen the beautiful faces of those innocent children. Imagine being their parent, or grandparent, or brother, or sister. Teachers take so much flack because they want a living wage and benefits and union protection, and conservatives are dead set against them. The treat them like dirt. Maybe they should consider that it was the teachers --all women-- who lunged at the gunman and/or got some of the children out of harm's way, while shielding the remainder with their own bodies. Sometimes I wonder what the hell is happening to this country. We need to get our priorities straight. Our children ARE our priority because they are our future. They deserve more from us, and I fully agree with the President when he said that we're not doing enough. I look forward to the discussions that are sure to take place on Capitol Hill in the very near future, and I know that my friends here at Care2 will keep this issue at the forefront because, as Dandelion suggested, we're the ones who have to put a stop to it!

Noted and signed! It is true! We must make as much noise as possible to help Obama fight the gun lobbies, (and ban all Charlston Heston movies...even Ben Hur...), this is the only way to get any changes! Enough is enough! I also think that the school counslers must be guided on how to detect and treat children expressing anti social behavior!

This needs to be in the forefront of these discussions also ....this is NOT an isolated incident and needs to be discussed with compassion and strength...and resolved.

Guns kill ... all kinds of guns...you have my vote ...we have to have better and tougher gun laws ...
in our country there is not a need for assault weapons...

OK, here's something.....I went to the store today and walked past the large SUV that was parked in a disabled parking spot. A man and woman had just got to that SUV. The man had a gun on his waist, in clear sight. I asked him about it and he said it was legal to carry guns in the state of WA. I told him it was illegal to park in a disabled parking spot if you're not disabled. Guess you have more privleges when you have a gun. He didn't shoot me, but I did check my tires after shopping.

damn, Richelle!!..I work for a family owned business, 3 generations, now working..and the majority of the work I do is for our military (since the economy crash)..any way, the Son, is a Ruff Ryder and very much into guns, has permits to carry a concealled weopan..anyway, this summer, he had driven his bike to work and was running errands, including a personal one..went into SouthCenter Shopping Mall (South Seattle, WA)..and was heading to the Disney Store to buy a child's birthday present for that evening..He is clean cut, wears a military hairstyle, had his "Vest on"..and the bulge of his glock was showing, under the vest..4 Tukwilia Police and 2 security cops...did surround him, handcuff him, and said, "JUST WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING!?!"...or course he was really embarassed!!!!!!!..so when he told me what happened and why he was so late getting back to work, I said, "WHY THE HELL ARE YOU ALWAYS CARRYING THAT STUPID GUN ANYWAY!?!..WELL, his son (the grandson ), has now stopped wearing his , "glock" at work (THANK GOD!!..now if he would only stop pulling his pants down to show off his boxers!!..at 56 , I had a hardtime "respecting" someone that I have to teach the business to, while making sure the 2 year old grandson has his pants pulled up over his diapers!!..so i don't care anymore..I choose my battles!!)...
and this summer, when they were repainting the outside of the building, in 80 + degrees, shirtless, going up and down the ladders..but wearing stupid guns........I just had to laugh, WHY!!??!!..hELL, we have REAL SABERS, that we engrave for military awards...SOME OF THE SCARIEST KNIVES i HAVE EVER SEEN....anyway, WE tease him about carrying a gun...but he is adament..and he uses every mass killing spree, as a WHY HE CARRIES!..AND MY BUS WAS DELAYED GOING TO WORK WHEN 5 OF OUR pOLICE OFFICERS WERE GUNNED DOWNED, AT THE COFFEE SHOP a couple of years ago,..I saw the crime scene 15 minutes after it happened..and it did scare the hell out me..I have sat in that coffee shop..and I did cross myself and said my prayers................( I prefer carrying mace, which is illegal..and I don't have any more, so pepper spray for me.....NO GUNS!!, even though so much of the last 20 years, someone is always trying to give me one or talk me into carrying one...I say , NO!......If my neighborhood is ever "invaded, then YES, and I am someone you would want on your side!..I can shoot 9 out of 10 clay discs out of the sky..and that was the first time I tried..I have a great eye..........BUT I LOVE AND CHERISH LIFE!!!!..so , I choose!..(plus, I am such a seamstress, I always have scissors, including in my purse..and an old boyfriend that was a Cop, taught me selfdefense...and I am very aware of my surroundings when in public and always walk with confidance..all the ABC's!)..but if they are crazy..they donot need a gun..if they have domestic violence in their background, they donot need a gun.......NO one needs an assault rifle but the active mILITARY'S.....i DEFEND legal safe & sane gunownership.............but the USA IS NUTS!!!....keep signing those petitions please!!!!...and THANKYOU from the bottom of my heart!!

Even if it as an illusion to think that stricter gun-regulation will prevent guns from being around, at least it will -largely- limit the number of guns "out in the open" and make it harder to get them. The problem is though that there are so many guns in circulation in the US that it will be a long time before the effect will show.

What wonders me -as most of us outside the US I guess- is: how can a gun-regulation in a democratic country authorize non-military citizens to buy/possess/carry a 100 rounds a minute assault gun?

Reading thru the comments, I have a feeling i shouldnt say anything because i am the OBVIOUS minority here, but since the story was sent to me and I want to express my opinion, I am going to add a different perspective..

You can pass all the laws in the world to abolish guns with large magazines, or all guns, but it will NOT stop those who really want to get them from getting them. There is a HUGE underground and criminal enterprises that will continue manufacturing/supplying them. So all it will do is stop legal citizens from getting them. Its sucks they were ever invented, but they are here and that will NOT change. EVER.

I am all for background checks, mandatory training, a limit on purchases, and a permit in EACH state. and THEN, with the money from the checks, training and permits, they go back and check peoples records periodically. I also think if you want a gun, you should take a psychological test.

I GET the emotional side of it and the obvious frustration and that people WANT SOMETHING DONE NOW.
But the sad reality is that with the way the economy is going, people are desperate and things may get worse and the police are already understaffed and over worked. If you take away guns, and only those out to cause harm to others have them, I can GUARANTEE it will become a MASSIVE FREE FOR ALL like you have NEVER EVER SEEN. Look at whats going on in other countries where people are not allowed to carry and people are being massacred at an ALARMING rate by radicals.
Think about it..

Say your a criminal and decide to break into a home..You see two houses..one has a large dog or a security system or its a known fact the owner carries a gun.. ..which house will you choose?

I know thats much different from the mass shootings that have been in public places (schools, churches, malls) which were unarguably damn horrible. BUT if people are allowed to carry in public places, lives could have been saved..COULD have been..no guarantee of course

just my opinion.

Gina, please compare USA with Canada and UK, and think again about that "alarming rate" of gun homicides.

Statistics, gun homicides data for 2009: GunPolicy,org.

-- UK; 0.3 per 1,000,000 citizens (= 18); 6.72 private firearms per 100 ppl;
-- Canada; 5 per 1,000,000 citizens; (= 173); 23.82 private firearms per 100 ppl;
-- USA; 30 per 1,000,000 citizens; (= 9,146); 88.82 private firearms per 100 ppl.

I'd say that guns kill, that's what they are made for.

Unfortunately, I don't have to imagine what these poor families are feeling right now as I lost a daughter in 1988. It wasn't by a shooting but that doesn't matter. The horror is just the same. The violence must stop! Every time a story like this hits the news it rips my heart to shreds, as I relive my own tragedy, knowing what the families are going through.
