ALBANY-The New York State Senate was in session, and Sen. Hiram Monserrate was there in Albany -- the same day a grand jury in Queens indicted him on domestic assault charges.

The former police officer is accused of slashing his girlfriend's face with a broken glass in New York City in December.

After meeting with him, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith said Monserrate is stepping down as chair of the Senate's Consumer Affairs Committee and will continue his duties as senator.
