"Pannes are waterlogged, low-oxygen zones of salt marshes. Despite the stresses associated with global warming, pannes are "plant diversity hotspots," according to Keryn Gedan, a graduate student and salt marsh expert at Brown University. At least a dozen species of plants known as forbs inhabit these natural depressions, Gedan said. The species include the purple flower-tipped plants Limonium nashii (sea lavender), the edible plant Salicornia europaea (pickleweed) and Triglochin maritima, a popular food for Brent and Canada geese as well as ducks and other migratory waterfowl."

Well, it ISN'T WARMING anymore and even Real Climate says that it won't start warming again until ......2020!

Hardly "run-away" is it?

"Over at Real Climate they are busy giving climate skeptics reason to cheer:

"We hypothesize that the established pre-1998 trend is the true forced warming signal, and that the climate system effectively overshot this signal in response to the 1997/98 El Niño. This overshoot is in the process of radiatively dissipating, and the climate will return to its earlier defined, greenhouse gas-forced warming signal. If this hypothesis is correct, the era of consistent record-breaking global mean temperatures will not resume until roughly 2020."

Imagine, twenty-two or more years (1998 to ~2020) of no new global temperature record. What would that do to the debate?"

Thanks for the story Dee. Alas, if more people understood the impact of their actions on the ecosystems that sustain us, there might be some hope for the preservation of all our wetlands.

I wish I know which world Judy lives on, I'd like to move there! The markers are there that globale warming is happening and continuing to happen. One of the signs is the ice on the mountains is decreasing and that it is melting earlier, this is increasing each year. The ice melting in the Arctic is faster than anticipated. The dangerous insects from Europe, such as the wolf mosquito, are moving further north each year and are expected in the south coast in the next few years. If there isn't any ongoing global warming (which Judy has been denying up to now) then why are these continuing to happen and not beginning to reverse?

As I have said before..I am just grateful..most of us know how serious and real this issue is..And glad that so many of us are willing and hoping to change things for the better..

Thank you Gillian and Karen..your comments are very wise..true and most appreciated..

Unfortunately, people like Judy are either ignorant,in denial,or both. There are more people like her and that's why this planet is in trouble.Greed,ignorance,denial,ect.,,are all factors. We have to at least try to change that mindset, and try to save our planet before it's too late.

Cher...I live here on Earth. You seem to be living in Goreland. It hasn't warmed for 11 years and it probably won't start again for quite a while.... so your fantasy of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Alteration ,CACA
is just that!

Solar cycle affecting global climate, federally funded peer-reviewed study finds
'Links 11-year solar cycle with tropical Pacific phenomenon that so strongly influences climate variability around the world'The total energy reaching Earth from the sun varies by only 0.1 per cent across the solar cycle and scientists now think these ups and downs cause natural weather and climate variations other than the their subtle effects from the larger pattern of human-caused global warming.
Excerpt
Building on previous work, the NCAR researchers used computer models of global climate and more than a century of ocean temperature to answer longstanding questions about the connection between solar activity and global climate.

The research, published this month in a paper in the Journal of Climate, was funded by NSF, NCAR's sponsor, and by the US Department of Energy."

Meteorologist says man not cause of climate issue: 'We could very well be headed for a cool period'Dave Dahl, chief meteorologist at KSTP in the Twin Cities, told Hudson Rotarians that man is not the culprit when it comes to global warming, or climate change, issues.

Dahl spoke to the Hudson Thursday Noon Rotary Club on July 9 and said what was called “global warming” is now tabbed “climate change” because temperatures on the planet have decreased in the past couple years.

“Over 30,000 scientists are now saying that humans are not causing changes in global conditions,” Dahl said. “The climate has ‘changed’ since the planet began.”

He said that the heating of the earth — which is mostly a good thing — is caused primarily by water vapor — about 98 percent. He said carbon and other elements account for about 2 percent of the mix. Of that 2 percent, human involvement represents only about 2 percent of that (.0004 percent).

“It is my feeling, and the opinion of more and more scientists, that the sun is the driving force behind climate changes — heating and cooling,” Dahl said. “Solar activity, including flares and sunspots, is usually quite active during warm stretches. The activity has been very quiet the past couple of years and the temperatures have dropped.”

He said last year’s solar activity was the quietest in 100 years. So far in 2009, the activity is even less.

“In the northern hemisphere, the 2007-08 winter was the coldest in 50 years and 2008-09 was the coldest in a century,” Dahl said.

Another flaw in the entire system is the recording of temperatures around the world, he said.

“The United States has the most reputable system, but the recording system in nearly nine out of 10 locations does not meet National Weather Service standards. Many of the sites are located on tar roofs, next to air conditioner exhaust fans, etc. The records are questionable.”

He said we should be using only satellite information, which shows that temperatures have been cooling for several years.

UN IPCC Scientist: 'Natural climate change denial of the last decade is not sustainable anymore'
'Global cooling has now been happening for so long' even RealClimate.org now admits!

UN IPCC Scientist Richard Courtney responds to new peer-reviewed study calling climate models "fundamentally wrong." (See: Study shakes foundation of climate theory! Now, I'd like Heather and Ancil to put up or shut up.

Where is your proof the planet is still warming?

Where is your proof that I am paid by oil companies?

I'd like an apology for the name calling and smears !

"Well, it ISN'T WARMING anymore and even Real Climate says that it won't start warming again until ......2020!"

Quote mining just like Creationists do, are you?

To the others, try going to the original source and reading that instead of accepting Anthony Watts' spin on it:
http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2009/07/warminginterrupted-much-ado-about-natural-variability/

{{{The contentious part of our paper is that the climate system appears to have had another “episode” around the turn of the 21st century, coinciding with the much discussed “halt” in global warming. Whether or not such a halt has really occurred is of course controversial (it appears quite marked in the HadCRUT3 data, less so in GISTEMP); only time will tell if it’s real. Regardless, it’s important to note that we are not talking about global cooling, just a pause in warming.}}}

"It hasn't warmed for 11 years and it probably won't start again for quite a while.... so your fantasy of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Alteration ,CACA is just that!"

Lying for Exxon again? No, what happened 11 years ago was not GLOBAL warming, but an extreme temperature spike that affected only the south Pacific region (El Nino). The actual warming didn't stop until 2006. BTW, here in Texas we are suffering a heat wave, with many days of high temperatures well above 100 degrees F. Just as the previous winter was quite mild, with spring like temperatures as early as mid February.

THE WORLD IS NOT COOLING, JUDY! YOU ARE EITHER LYING OR DELUSIONAL!

Gee it's been a while since I had a go at talking to the champion of "the world is really cooling down", and Global Warming is all a myth, made up by Al Gore. Have you read Palin's denial of man made global warming recently? Just wondering! :-) At least she admits there might be some Global Warming, even though she doesn't believe it's man made. At least when she finally comes to the realization that there really is man made Global Warming she can claim "I wasn't fully informed". She just puts it out there as if she's got some knowlege, but some people purport to do the research and still deny what's happening to the earth Right Now.

Well enough for now, today's been a fairly good day so far, and I promised myself I'd not allow too much aggravation before I retire for the night. So keep on denying if you will, but as for me and the better informed of Care2 folks, (which most of you here are), we will keep up to date on life.
