A controversial bill that Afghan President Hamid Karzai promised to review before implementing quietly became law last month, allowing police to enforce language that stipulates a wife's sexual duties and restricts a woman's ability to leave her own home

"Karzai had promised to send the bill to parliament before it was published, but this week women's rights advocates learned it had already become an enforceable law despite heavy international and national criticism.

The Shiite Personal Status Law which applies to the country's minority Shiite women, was originally even more pernicious than the final version. In March a western embassy translated a portion of the law as defining a woman's role as "readiness for sex and not leaving the house without the husband's permission."

OMG, this is horrible. I read that women pray to die, that's how bad it is over there. US military isn't helping one single bit either. Thanks Dee.

How can a woman's financial stability be guaranteed when her life in the family depends on the man's whim? Women must be free to decide their own lives, go where they want to go, wear what they want to wear (even traditional dress if they want). Thanks for telling us, Dee!

Thanks Dee. How did Karzai sneak this one past the UN? This is dispicable and is meant to appease voters in their upcoming election. If I were an Afghan woman with any rights, I would buy myself a plane ticket out of that hell-hole.

So glad that I am not a muslim women, and so glad that I don't live in one of those muslim nations... They treat their women like trash, when women are agift to man... The enslave them in chains and bondages with their silly little traditons that are not valid... Freedom to our sisters in these countries. may they deny the faith and be free

So, he's bowed to the Mullahs after all those postulations of being an educated, right-thinking man. What is it about the muslims and their phobia about giving women rights? it smacks of ever so much middle-age twaddle.

Not every Muslim man treats his wife (or daughters) poorly and not every Muslim woman wishes to escape her home. I'm betting that none of you know any Muslim women at all. You are hearing about the extremes. Yes, the law is a step backwards. Why is it the job of the US military to step in and change law in another country when we can't stop incest and spousal abuse here?

this obscene oppression illustrates the puppets strings being pulled again !
the UN has no excuse ... the question is what will they do?
the voices of the true Prophets of Islam must rise in outcry on behalf of all oppressed women !
my prayers for each dear soul are rising!

What's new?...Karzai, whilst screaming 'democracy now' has recruited two criminal henchmen to stand beside him in the next election, which he has a very good chance of winning...The only justice that will ever come to these sadly downtrodden women will only come with evolution, it will not be hastened by war...Which will do nothing other than swell the ranks of the idiot men who consider women inferior...('They are ruining our way of life, my woman will always be subservient to ME!)...'We' must fight them!...Butt out America...

'Evolution'...With the help of a groundswell of womens' rights activists and the affected women themselves...

This! THIS!! is a FREAKING OUTRAGE! Another blow against women everywhere! If one person is not free, none are free. Lets not stand for this is inexcusable. What are you going to do now you know?. A faith without works is dead. Duke Deltree
