TREECE, Kan. -- Mayor Bill Blunk sees no reason for sugar-coating his opinion when asked to describe this town.

"“It’s dead,” he said. “Wasted land.”

Almost anywhere else on the map, such bluntness could cost a politician re-election. But not here. Mr. Blunk has the near-unanimous support of the population, 140 people or so, who are perhaps singular among residents of municipalities in that they all want out of theirs."

This is such an injustice. It made me think too, about the hometowns of my late Grandma and my late Aunt. They lived in Flat River and in Elvins, MO. The small towns are now consolidated as Park Hills, MO. The most prominent feature in town is the looming chat dump, a veritable mountain. My cousins, siblings and I, and innumerable local children played on the chat dump, climbing the mountain and sliding down over and over. This was in the 1950's and '60's. I ran across an article on the site a few mos. ago, which I posted on Care2. These KS residents should be relocated!

It would be nice for someone to come in and make this into a buuuutiful town... unfortunately most have become ghost towns, and people do not want to invest in them

Amazing to see that the Republicans who rail against "big government" and "government interference" and of course, "wacko environmentalists" are begging for the feds to bail them out and buy their contaminated hell hole...I think the Republican hypocrites should be barred from asking for EPA assistance for their citizens, as they did nothing but castrate the agency during the criminal Bush regime...and their citizens should wake up and take out the trash, politically speaking.
