Keith Bardwell, who is white, quit the post with a one-sentence statement to Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne and no explanation of his decision: ''I do hereby resign the office of Justice of the Peace for the Eighth Ward of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, effective November 3, 2009.''

Bardwell refused to perform the ceremony for Beth Humphrey and Terence McKay because they are of different races.

Well at least he is a man of his word, he said he would never marry a mixed cultural couple and that if it came out that he didn't do this, he would step down from his position.

I guess that makes him honorable huh?

Noted Dee, thank you for this news, you just made my day. If your personal moral or principles conflict with your paid job position, you need to get another job and allow someone else the opportunity to do their job.

I don't know how he has gotten away with it as long as he had..I am so glad this last couple reported him..

As for him being honorable in resigning..Nope..not in my opinion..as he would have been fired if he hadn't..

Nothing honorable whatsoever with this jerk..

I wonder how long it will take to find a real non-racist.

He is being put down because he is a racist..and though he may have the right to feel whatever his sorry self needs to feel..he does not have the right to deny a marriage based on his own ignorant prejudice..

What does Vic abusing dogs have to do with racism..lol...I don't get the connection there..but just for the record..Vic is a scuzzbucket for doing what he did..

i think you should stand up for what you believe in, even if it is unpopular and compromises your job security. the problem is that you need to make sure your beliefs are based on fact. do mixed race kids suffer more than other kids (at least one has done pretty well for himself). and is the solution to keep them from being born or to make the world a more accepting place. this man thinks he is helping children. he just needs to be shown that he's doing more harm than good.

When you take a job, be it in the public or private sector, you do so knowing the job comes with certain duties, and if you don't want to do them then quit like this character did. It's not his place to decide what may or may not happen to this couple in the future, it's a little bit like playing God!?

I think if you take a job that requires you to work without the ability to show bias, such as ANY GOVERNMENT POSITION, if you refuse to do that job, you should be fired. Just like if I refused to fed my kids, or cloth them, it is a right I may have, to do what I want to my kids, but if I choose not to fed them or make sure they have antiquated living space and supplies, I am wrong under the law saying I have to protect my child at all cost at all times.

This mans JOB was to MARRY PEOPLE REGARDLESS OF RACE OR RELIGION or HANDICAP. he refused to do that and is now paying that price... he'd still have his job if he were doing it under the law of which he had to agree upon the day he was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace... yeah great peace keeping he's doing eh??

Yeah a real moral individual... NOT!!!!!!!!!

Wonderfully expressed Peggy..I couldn't agree more..

He had no right to refuse to marry this couple..and he is done..No more can he treat people that way..
Thank goodness..

Willetta, I beg to differ with you and so does the US Supreme Court:
http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/conlaw/loving.html

I've read articles about this man and I have to say that he truly breaks my heart. He has since made statements that he is friends with colored people and even allows them to use his bathroom (!!!!). It's so sad to me that this man does not even SEE his prejudice.

Good riddance to bad rubbish! It's about time that he'd been pushed out . Shame on his wife for not only condoning his ignorance but also participating in the perpetuation. This continent is full of mixed bloods, my ancestry included. Diversity is the spice of life which adds strength to our survival and cultural enhancement. Peace in our Quest for Truth, the preservation of all life and the power of true love which surpasses all barriers.!
