So now we know: Many, if not most, people alive today have some Neanderthal ancestry. This finding, which comes from analysis of the Neanderthal genome, has taken many experts by surprise.

And it took the experts by surprise! What planet are these experts on! They will express surprise that animals have feelings next! Oh sorry they already have!

Erm...bash not the ancestors! :P

I suspect there's a few more *surprises* waiting for the scientists; one anthropologist interviewed for a program on one of the natural history channels already found evidence that our capability and use of speech came FROM our Neanderthal ancestors, and NOT the Cro Magnons. It's contested, but probably because humans in the first place disparaged the Neanderthals and made up assumptions about them that were completely wrong, and stereotypes of those unfounded assumptions persist regarding their appearance, behaviour, activities, and so on.

It's beginning to more and more appear that they may have been more developed than those they were subsumed into, the Cro-magnons, which eventually became Homo sapiens.
