The study of mobilization and organization of money in churches is not new: it is actually a staple of Western Christianity where documentation is a routine practice and openness is accepted as a norm of existence for most religious bodies.

In December 2002, the founder-owner of Liberty Gospel Church, Calabar, revealed how an elder of the church stole millions of naira of tithe proceeds (“my money”, she called it) meant to be lodged in a bank. The founder could not report to the police or even to the general membership of the church because, according to her, many people, including her sceptical husband, would laugh at her misfortune, (Personal communication with Evangelist [Mrs.] Helen Ukpabio, 28.12.2002).

Thanks, Kelli. I recall visiting a somewhat isolated tribal village in Central America many years ago. They had a church run by missionaries and every week they would take up a collection to support the home church back in the U.S. This struck me as odd, because I knew that the home church was taking up collections to support the mission. So as far as I could determine, unless the money was deposited directly to God's bank account, they were collecting money at both ends and not spending it anywhere.

Good point Mark, if both churches are collecting from their congregations, where does that money go if not into the pocket$ of those in power?
IMHO, organised religion is not for the benefit of the people it is supposed to serve, but soley for those at the 'top' so they can live a richer life at the member's expense!
Thanx Kelli for further proof of mainstream religion's corruption and abuses... for those who are/were unaware it is an eye opener.
