Tens of thousands of ordinary people signed petitions as part of the campaign to abolish the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Today slavery affects millions of people around the world. By signing the Declaration you can be part of a new mass movement for change

My lord, I just cannot believe this cruel form of slavery to a human being! This photo shows how inhumane subhumans can be, it is so sad that it made me cry to see this young lady in a contraption that does not belong on her at all, when will slavery be abolished? What the heck? This photo looks like something from the Roman era or something...it truly upsets me to see it on her.

I signed the declaration, I am #55598 and signed up for messages from them.I would like to thank Charles 4 the forward. TY Kelli for this article, hopefully it will get through to people that you cannot treat nor use other humans as your personal slave. This is just disgusting!

Noted and thanks Kelli and Charles for the posting. Petition signed.

This decision by our High Court in Australia just happened today. It's hard to believe slavery has happened in this day and age in our country.

Brothel owner's sex slave conviction upheld

The High Court has upheld the convictions of a Melbourne brothel owner who became the first person found guilty of possessing and using sex slaves in Australia.

- Order overturned
- Women enslaved
- Jail sentence

Brothel owner Wei Tang was found guilty in 2006 of five counts of possessing a slave and five counts of exercising a power of ownership over a slave.

She was sentenced to 10 years' jail for her role in enslaving five Thai women at her brothel, Club 417, and forcing them to work off debts of up to $45,000.

But in June last year, Tang successfully appealed her convictions in the Victorian Court of Appeal.

The court quashed her convictions and ordered a new trial, ruling the directions given to the jury were inadequate.

The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions appealed that decision to the High Court.

Tang cross-appealed against the order for a new trial.

The High Court today overturned the Court of Appeal's order for a new trial and held that the prosecution made out the required elements of the offences.

Tang was the first person to be found guilty by a jury under the federal anti-slavery laws introduced in 1999.

The case came to light after Club 417, in the inner Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, was raided in 2003.

A Victorian County Court jury in Melbourne found her guilty of the counts after an eight-week trial and was sentenced to jail for a minimum of six years.

The five Thai women worked six days a week serving up to 600 customers to pay their debt.

If they worked a seventh day, they could keep the $50 per customer.

The women were not under lock and key but had little money, limited English, worked long hours and feared they would be found by immigration authorities.

Their visas had been obtained illegally and their passports were withheld by Tang.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many people think that slavery no longer exists. Yet at least 12 million people live and work in contemporary forms of slavery which have been defined and prohibited in international conventions. This campaign aims to revitalise the abolitionist spirit which created the momentum to end the slave trade in 1807 and harness it to make the abolition of all forms of slavery, in law and in practice, a priority for each and every government in the world.

Thanks, Kelli and thanks for the fwd, Annelies. I signed the petition but can't remember what # I am. Also sent an ecard. I can't believe slavery still exsits. Slavery has exsisted since B.C. and it's such a shame!! It only goes to show that the evil doer has a strong hold over it and the only way to abolish it is to pray to GOD because HE is our Creator.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to read and sign. My Afro-American Ancestors were made slaves in the state of Georgia until the end of the Civil War.
I've signed in reverence for what they were put through, stolen from their homeland, cramped into the storage holds of slave-ships.
After thousands of miles, they were brought to, separated and sold in a foreign land by those who spoke , to them,an unknown language, The only exception to their dilemma, was their recognition of some of the indigenous plants which grew there that had reminded them of their homeland.
Peace in our Quest for Truth
