Do you really want to celebrate the legacy of a man who committed heinous crimes against the Indigenous people of the Caribbean and throughout the Americas? Indian governments and the people they represent are requesting that the federal government...

It's time "We" end the hypocrisy of honoring those without any semblance of integrity.. Starting with Columbus is a good start.. South Dakota changing Columbus day to Native American Day is a step in the right direction. A national holiday recognizing the first people is long overdue. Let's get it on! Signed and moving! Thanks Kat.

This is a wonderful idea that I think would get a lot of support. No need to be apologetic Gorilly Girl. But with all the special interest groups out there people need to ask for what they want. History was written by the 'Empire Builders' who embellished the details to appear benevolent. No one is more deserving of recognition than the Indigenous people who have sometimes, all to graciously stepped aside or been pushed aside because they are peaceful people. I support this initiative whole-heartedly as a means to acknowledge and pay tribute to the richness of the cultures that Europeans tried to cleanse or 'assimilate' out of existence.

I sign at least one of these every year . . . just to let 'em know we're still out there and that not every American is buying the historical lie that Columbus "discovered" this country (which was inhabited)!

Absolutely Carole, he just discovered it was already inhabited.

It pains me that some of these blatant in your face things still exist. It only shows that we have a long way to go for many people still do not have a clue.

Sunday November 8, 2009, 3:44 pm

Ya know, Sheryl . . .

I was thinking back to me youth and history lessons. I remember having to learn (and memorize the dates) of "discoveries" of such explorers as Columbus, Vasco de Gama, Kublai Khan, Ponce de Leon . . .

And I can recall asking how they could have "discovered" lands where people were already living.

The explanation was that, "These were explorers from civilized countries."

(And we accepted that!)

(There's a great deal of comfort in being old enough to disregard conventions . . . and instead of being deemed "crazy," you are now considered to be "eccentric.")

We can start by not celebrating Columbus Day.

When I lived in Utah, I used to ride with a motorcycle gang. We rode dirt bikes in southern Utah - Canyonlands NP. I have seen first-hand and have photographs of petroglyphs and pictographs.

Let the Indians have their land back.

signed and forwarded to all I know. Gorilly Girl, I want you to think about this. We are taught "white history" but if natives have a day, they will have to teach some history about natives. Our kids aren't as dumb as we were and don't believe all the crap dealt to them by teachers. The ONLY way to force education is to get it recognized by the whites and put on calenders. Some kids WILL ask about it. This is to honor the past and help to educate the future. If you give up now, all will be lost in the changing :"history" being taught now.

I think way more Indian history should be taught in schools...the actual truth. And, in my opinion, the Indigenous people of America were/are WAY more civilized than the people that took their land, even though my ancestors may have been part of it.

GOD must be in our schools....all religions in schools. Take 10 minutes say to a class now it it time to be quiet and what ever you believe ... say a prayer or what ever you do to respect what you believe in. 10 minutes or ok make it 5 is that asking to much. We must respect what others believe in we can learn from that. There is and will never be on way to believe. ALL religions and how people believe to make there life better must be respected. This taught at a young age the world will be at peace the way it was meant to be.

Which particular "god" are you recommending to the Native-Americans Diane? Surely not the one in whose name these people were raped, slaughtered and disenfranchised?
"Abrahamic Gods" are the reason for most of the problems in the world, including all the major wars currently being waged which are basically the Christian Crusaders versus the Islamic Jihadists.
This type of religion is your solution for peace, quiet and atonement to the Native-American?

Shari G. (3)
Saturday November 14, 2009, 5:35 pm
Oh dear 'god'!. Lets please keep religion out of our schools! I did sign the petition because it might serve to wake up a few non-Indians. Let's have a petition to revise all the lying school books and tell it like it was and IS. Education is the only way to make any significant changes. The contributions of generations of Natives have been lost. The struggle often times seems hopelessly depressing, especially for the young. I don't think naming one day will help but I don't think it will hurt.
