Steven Tyler quit Aerosmith, says reports

Has Aerosmith truly called it quits after nearly 40 years of chart-topping rock 'n' roll?

Three months after frontman Steven Tyler broke his shoulder in a plunge from the stage in South Dakota, resulting in the cancellation of the band's remaining 2009 tour dates, various media outlets are reporting that Tyler has quit the band.

In a story posted Friday by the Las Vegas Sun, the group's lead guitarist, Joe Perry, said, "Steven quit, as far as I can tell. I don’t know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don’t know for how long, indefinitely, or whatever.”

"I don’t want him canceling any more gigs," Perry told the Sun.

The Boston-bred quintet, which has been a hard-rock hit-making machine since 1970 and a pioneering maker of music videos, has endured some obstacles since its last studio album, 2004's "Honkin' on Bobo." In May 2008, Tyler checked himself into a rehab facility, explaining in a press release that he wanted a "safe environment" in which to recover from several foot surgeries. Numerous concerts were postponed or cancelled.

Nevertheless, Tyler said in the statement, "Aerosmith has no plans to stop rocking. There’s a new album to record, then another tour.”

Perhaps not. Since then, Tyler, 61, has persued a solo project that, as he told the British magazine Classic Rock, will "be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself -- Brand Tyler.” He went on to mention that there may have been animosity in the Aerosmith ranks over the fact that he was working with a new management company separate from the band.

Now it appears that he wants a full-time career separate from the band. Facts are skecthy, but Fox News reported that the members of Aerosmith not named Tyler (Perry, guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton, and drummer Joey Kramer) plan to meet to discuss whether replacing him is in the best interest of the band. Perry, who also has a steady solo career, seems ready to dump his batterymate. He told the Las Vegas Sun that the band will probably find someone to fill in for the legendary singer, whose elastic mouth and onstage energy have defined the group as much as its sound. "We’ll be able to move the Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch," he said.

Oh I have loved Aerosmith since their very first album! Wow I am that old? LOL! They will be back rocking away I know it! Old rockers never die just fade away or something like that.
Thanks Kat

I cant imagine Aerosmith without Steven Tyler. They did have a good sound-but to me it was the front man Steven. I will be interested to see what he does if he goes out on his own. Thanks Kat.

All good things come to an end. Some thought Journey would end w/o Steve Perry. But guess what folks? The new guy sounds just like him and they are touring and making albums. So Aerosmith could just survive w/o Steve Tyler if they can find another big mouth like him.

I read he had taken a terrible fall and had broken his shoulder. At 61 you don't mend so well. I can't blame him actually if he doesn't want to keep the hard rockin going with an injury like that. Even at 3 months, one does not heal so fast.
I wish him well, as do all the others. Aeorsmith gave me years of entertainment and I was fortunate to see them live a couple times. Although the band members are all great musicians and I appreciate what they do, I just can't imagine it being the same without the lead singer of Steven. He'd be a real hard act to follow, he is one of a kind. Like the Rolling Stones, don't know who could fill Mick's shoes either. Sometimes a legend is a legend and those can't be replaced.

he's probably addicted again. the band just needs to give him time, and let him pursue a solo career. just like fergie, he could do both. the band has more to lose by cutting him loose permanently. i saw paul rodgers with queen and was blown away. and arnel pineda with journey is just as impressive. but, those are the exceptions.

It's about time Steven Tyer retired. Getting such injuries from concerts is reason enough to stop even if young. Tyler is in his 60s!

Steven Tyler IS Aerosmith. If he leaves, they should retire the name.
