Energy grids across the world are struggling to cope with a surge in demand for electricity and increasingly volatile supply from renewable power sources.

the ONLY "SMARTER" grid would be a SMALLER grid

> vanadium redox flow battery.....
> ... "It's very clean
since vanadium is provided for free by the nice little green faeries, right ?
> .. very safe, very long-lasting
and it's very very amazing how extremely short "very long"(according to those who want to make profits) in reality often turns out to

Oh, the Koch Brothers won't like any of this. Their oil-blackened hearts will put a stop to energy storage innovations. I'm more concerned with 1) our out-dated grids, and 2) hacking of the grids.

Adding significant storage capacity to the power grid would make solar and wind power more effective and useful. Rebuilding the Power Grid would allow closure of a significant number of the dirtiest Coal fired power plants in just avoided power loss

This is the solution, energy storage. All the talk about US energy Independence from the GOP (Giant Oil Producers) because of fracking is a lie. It will be a tough thing to change bu tit must. Here in Hawaii the local utility monopoly HECO, Hawaiian Electric Company, has been confronted with the future. They have done all the efficiency retros that are the low hanging fruit. They are compelled to buy solar, geothermal and wind. The people, facing the highest electric rates in the US, are installing PV as fast as they can. Now HECO has stepped in to obstruct this effort. Faced with long delays for the approval from HECO to install or connect with the grid, the start of the unplugging has begun.

Grid-level energy-storage would be a major breakthrough, but for the moment, the technology just doesn't exist. Huge amounts of energy are lost in the storing-process, leaked from storage, and in retrieval.

The main problem is that there isn't even a well-established branch of technology that, with refinement, could reasonably be expected to work without huge losses. This means that it's not even a matter of handing researchers money and waiting. We need to first wait until something promising comes up.
