Christians flee northern Iraq city




Attacks in the Iraqi city of Mosul have forced nearly 1,000 Christians, including 500 families, from their homes in just the past week, the governor of the northern Ninawa province says.

Duraid Mohammed Kashmoula on Saturday said most have taken shelter over the past 24 hours in schools, churches, monasteries and the homes of relatives in the northern and eastern fringes of Ninawa.

The flight came as Chaldean Archbishop Louis Sako said Iraq's Christians were facing a campaign of "liquidation" and called on the US military to do more to protect them.

A wave of attacks religiously targeted killings have left at least 11 Christians dead since September 28.

Major displacement

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press news agency, Kashmoula described the last seven days as a period of "major displacement".

He said provincial security officials were meeting with Christian leaders to protect the community "from the terrorists, the killers".

The violence in Mosul is occurring despite US-Iraqi operations launched over the summer aimed at routing al-Qaeda in Iraq and other fighters from remaining strongholds north of the capital.

A convoy carrying an official from Iraq's largest Sunni political party was targeted on Saturday while travelling through Mosul, but no one was hurt, police said.

A civilian and an armed man were killed in random gunfire in a Mosul market, a policeman said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to media.

Iraqi police in the city located 360km northwest of Baghdad have reported finding the bullet-riddled bodies of seven Christians in separate attacks so far this month, the latest a day labourer found on Wednesday.

The Christian community has been estimated at three per cent of Iraq's 26 million people, or about 800,000 Christians, and has a significant presence in the northern Ninawa.

Chaldean Archbishop Sako says Iraq's Christians are facing a campaign of "liquidation"

Mosul, IRAQ (AFP)

Nearly 1,000 Christian families have fled their homes in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul following the worst wave of sectarian violence in five years, provincial governor Duraid Kashmula said Saturday.

The Christians had taken shelter over the past 24 hours in schools and churches in the northern and eastern fringes of Nineveh province after attacks that have killed at least 11 Christians since Sept. 28, Kashumula said.

The latest flight came as Chaldean Archbishop Louis Sako said Iraq's minority Christians were facing a campaign of "liquidation" and called on the U.S. military to do more to protect them.


Sako said that since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003, more than 200 Christians had been killed and a string of churches attacked, and added that the violence had intensified in recent weeks, particularly in the north.

He said it was now time for Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Shiite Muslim-led government to deliver on repeated promises to do more to protect Iraq's minorities.

"We have heard many words from Prime Minister Maliki, but unfortunately this has not translated into reality," he said. "We continue to be targeted. We want solutions, not promises."

There were around 800,000 Christians in Iraq at the time of the U.S.-led invasion, a number that has now shrunk by a third as the faithful have fled the country, the archbishop said.

Sako said Christians are entirely dependent on the government and its U.S. backers for protection. Unlike the Shiite majority, the Sunni Arab former elite or the Kurds, they have no powerful tribes or militias to defend them.

In March, the body of the Chaldean archbishop of Mosul, Paul Faraj Rahho, was found in a shallow grave in the city two weeks after he was kidnapped.

In Baghdad, gunmen shot dead a Syrian Orthodox priest, Youssef Adel, near his home in the city centre in April in an attack condemned by Pope Benedict XVI.

Iraq's Christian community includes various denominations.

The Assyrian church has maintained its independence since the 5th century when it broke away from the rest of the Christian communion. Some of its followers still speak a modern version of Aramaic, the language of Christ.

The Chaldean Church broke away from the Assyrian Church when it recognized the authority of the Pope but it retains its own rite.

Iraq also has Syrian Orthodox and Catholic, and Armenian Orthodox and Roman Catholic congregations

It's so sad to hear such horrible news. Unfortunatly religion is still the gunpowder in the middle east, from Israel to Pakistan; it only needs a crazy nut to light a match and the barrel goes BOOOOM.
But on the west we have the impresion that, for the arab world, LIFE IS NOT IMPORTANT. And not only refered to non arab peple (or other religions), but to themselves. How many terrorists attacks on shiies and sunies, claiming thousends of victims? If people in the same country hate each other, how can peace and goodwill root?

I want to know: Are Iraqi Christians converts or are they as old as the Christian religion. If they are of the continual line then they are older than Islam. Jesus to them is the Son of God, whereas Islam considers Him only a Profit. Therefor He is hated because of???? WHY????? Can I get clarification please. It is important to me.
