What a sad, horrid, disgusting thing these people did to that elephant. He was just hungry and trying to find food... And, it seems like after the fact, they still didn't care about the elephant. Now, here he is, wandering around suffering from unspeakable pain. Grrrrrrrr.... I am one of the many now that the more I know people, the more I like the animals better!

Everytime I think I have seen or heard the worst torture and cruelty that man can visit on an animal there comes one more crueler than the last. I have written the paper to state my utter disgust. I stated that it used to be my dream to visit India but I find more and more that the cruelty shown to animals in India seems only to be matched by the Chinese and I will not set foot in this country. I am just sick. Thank you for no photos on this one.

It saddens me to say it is EASY for horrific treatments to prevail EVERYWHERE as long as animals are viewed as PROPERTY for our use, entertainment, and consumption!

There is also one EASY and very powerful direct action we can all take to completely obliterate such disgusting torment EVERYWHERE and that is simply to practice a totally compassionate VEGAN lifestyle!

You can start NOW.

Is there no depth of cruelty that man is incapable of? I just cannot fathom such sadistic behavior. So very sad! Elephants have been serving man in so many countries of the world, including India.

Thank you all for noting and commenting.

To top off the sadistic cruelty here, this is a HIGHLY Endangered species. Perhaps we need to ask a larger governing entity to take action. It doesnt appear the governing body over this village is doing much, if anything. I googled this and it appeared in several news sources last Friday, with no update as of yet. If anyone finds anything out, please post.

Maybe we should ask IFAW if they can help?

Rebecca S (160)

Here is what I wrote to the editor. I made sure I did not go off because then they probably wouldn't print it...although, from the looks of the comments here, they haven't printed half of what has been sent.

This truly is a disgrace and the people involved should be ashamed. Surely a better solution could have been found than torturing this poor elephant. While the deaths of the people are tragic, that doesn't justify this level of cruelty.

We humans need to recognize and take responsibility for the fact that we are infringing on the habitats of wildlife. We must realize that such infringement will sometimes bring conflict wherein we get hurt. One cannot blame the animal that fights back for its very survival in such instances.

Since we are supposedly the "superior" species, we must find better ways to lessen the impact on our wildlife. We must NEVER resort to gratuitous torture tactics as "punishment" on an animal that is only trying to live in whatever way it can. When we resort to those behaviors, are we truly "superior"? I don't think so!

I hope these people are prosecuted for this crime, for that is what it is. I also hope someone finds this tortured elephant and helps it heal from this horrific injury. I'm saddened and sickened...and that reflects very poorly on your nation and your people.

TY Alice 4 the forward. TY Echo for the article as sad as it is, people all over the world should know what is happening to our beautiful elephants and all animals. This is very sadly noted.
Also want to thank Sophia & Rebecca for writing to the Editor, good work ladies.
Echo, you had an excellent idea, so I did it, I wrote to the IFAW in India, here is a copy of my letter, I will post a response when & if I receive one, thank you kindly for helping this poor animal, all of you here!

To IFAW in India,
To whom it may concern,

The following is a most digusting display of inhumanity. I would like to know if there is anything that can be done for these endangered species? They are very lovable, endearing animals, this action that this mob did was not only uncalled for but are these people human?I do understand that the elephant killed some people, but they must have teased it or something, because Elephants are usually friendly passive souls. It still did not deserve what happened to it!I, for one do not appreciate any animal being abused, but this is just horrible treatment of such a beautiful creature. Is there no justice for this elephant? Can you please get back to me and let me know if there is anything that you can possibly do to stop this from happening again? Or if you can find this elephant and maybe help it? I thought Elephants were considered sacred in India, so why would the people in this particular case want to do such a horrendous act upon an innocent animal, it suffered so very much, that my heart is aching inside for this poor animal, they feel pain just like humans.Just imagine what he/she went through, this is WRONG! Please take action on this! Do something to help our Elephants, we want them around! Please get back to me if you cannot help on this matter, then please let me know who can.

Here is the story from the India newspaper: KEONJHAR: People of a town in Orissa's Keonjhar district executed a barbaric revenge on an elephant that had killed eight people over the last two years.

On Tuesday evening, when the elephant raided the area for fruits, a mob doused it with petrol and set it on fire. Its entire body in flames, the elephant ran wildly in all directions looking for water. But the mob beat drums and threw firecrackers to block its escape routes. Blinded with pain and disoriented, it would crash to its knees, struggle to its feet and run around again.

The elephant was on the verge of collapse when a downpour put out the flames. He was last seen on Wednesday, severely burnt but walking on NH-215. Forest officials said they have no information about the condition of the elephant.

"We have no information about this incident. I will definitely start an inquiry," assistant conservator of forests Bimalendu Acharya said.

{my name}

It does break my heart to know that this happened to this poor baby.

Noted!! this is one of the most horrible story of human cruelty I have read. It qualifies to be in the top 10 on the Wall of Shame. That is what makes mobs so frightening they feed upon the frenzy they cause. This poor elephant could not have done anything that justified the cruel agony it suffered. Their punishment will come, I hope by the laws of their own nation and the global community should let them know how appalling this story is (it makes you feel sick or I do). I am sure they will be punished by the law of karma~ when and how I don't know. I just have to believe their punishment equals their crime. People who are continuously multiplying, destroying the wild habitat for their own villages, bursting into the wild animals homes and are forcing the animals to act somehow, most of the times desperately - sometimes killing the intruders - the humans. People are killing so many animals for such various "reasons", but they seam shocked when an animal stands up for himself and reacts violently. It's like the animals have no rights but the duty to obey to human stupidity, evilness, greed and cruelty. Finally the animal was punished for trying to survive...Stupid and cruel world. I won't bring a child to this world that would be gorgeous if the so called "humanity" did't exist, but it managed to make the world ugly through its idiotic and mean actions.

I agree with you and think it can not, but I ask myself, how could this happen?
It seems that the mob was well organized and I think that these people on 1 way or another so filled with hate that they do not normally respond, maybe they lost a beloved one by an elephant or their harvest, poeple do live in property there .How I will respond ...? as 1 of my children would loose their lives by an elephant ..?
Everyone here knows that the habitat of animals increasingly compromised and now I will not judge what happened ..., but do something positive for animals, so I thought about Cher who posted a while ago a news item on C2 placed on the reception of elephants and a donation given to the burnt elephant now much suffers.I want these people to support their good work .... I hope that you all have a few $ $ or euros to donate ....

this is real.
- Queen Elizabeth, and Rothschild,

- you are delusional, if you think that I would give you complete,

sole rights to ,.. all of Africa.

Like I was born at night, but not last night. comprende'

If you like I can explain,.. EXACTLY, "everything" you are doing in AFRICA.

Your "boys",.. Egon,... Bruce, the Advisor to the PM's..

Egon' wants to buy us out for the insect spray,

Egon, wants Nigeria, Egon Knows the chief,

Egon, wants the countries around Nigeria,

Egon, says, it would make it much easier, if we have exclusive rights, for the entire continent of Africa..

From wanting to buy us out, for Johnsons, for bug spray,

- to exclusive rights for all of Africa,.. because it would just make it easier.

- it would make it easier for you to continue to use Africa, as an experiment...

- Queen Elizabeth(Rothschild), if you are so sincere, about helping AFRICA.

you won't mind,,

1. shaking my hand, and I am not kneeling,

2. Giving me a real contract, with yours, and Rothschilds, signatures.
.. that gives me total, and final say, as to if, and, what you are doing, is right for AFRICA. We want Africa GREEN, as it should be. and self sustaining. totally. as will be the rest of the EARTH.

3. I have all the free energy devices we need, not counting all the technology you are hiding from clean up the Earth,,,QUICKLY !
Don't make me do this all by myself(ourself, Agrogreen, Rock1 Productions.)
Start putting this stuff to use .. NOW, like as in yesterday.

4. The things you are doing,.. like making Bill(Rock 1),
put in the first adds for Conan, in like 5 minutes,.. on BETA tape,.
Those commercials, are not representative, of how we do things, and I am pissed, that you are attempting to dis-credit us, in any way you can.

Quit screwing around, all that bull, get with Our Program,

.. Save Our Earth. Help us, don't hinder us,

- it would be to your benefit,( your personal well being, to do so)

.. such as in,..
when I start telling every-one, EXACTLY, how much you have screwwed them up,
- the technology, you have been hiding, all of it,
- the real UNIVERSE
- what you do in AFRICA, everything..

you will not be "liked', much, by anyone, if you catch my drift.

Talking to me personally, would be much better, for YOU!

Don't be shy, email me, and we can "talk"

I am not joking. you know it.

ps., everytime you send a different "boy", to try and mess us up,
I will explain, more of what you are doing, to all... and you will have less, and less, chances at proving your sincerity.

I just keep thinking about the elephant probably had to defend himself the first time and killed the villagers because they probably attacked him or tried to prevent him from finding food. As payback, these nasty little people then set him on fire?? ON FIRE?! WTF?! This this poor old man of the jungle, who is hungry, isolated and now injured beyond belief in abject pain is wandering desperately, looking for relief from his pain and victimization.

I give up...I give up on humans, entirely. There's just no dealing with a species like this one who does things like this and then claims to be so goddamned "superior." There's not a thing superior about what those horrible little men did to that elephant. No excuses, no justifications. Nothing. If humans would learn to control their population and not monopolize everything around them, then they MIGHT have an ounce of insight to qualify them for consideration as a "superior species." But not after a performance like this one.

Another heartbreaking news item. I'm in tears. Another new low for the human. Is there no end?

The cruelty of people toward animals never ceases to disgust and repulse me. I simply don't understand how they could do a thing like this. It is horrible and they deserve to be locked up. If I had my way, they would be locked up forever.

I had pretty much the same reply as Free Spirit, hopefully they aren't just trying to appease us.
I still want to see them suffer the same, those viscious little people!

ABC De ,Midwest USA ,says:I cannot believe what I just read. Villagers set a living breathing majestic elephant on FIRE! Then they tortured the elephant even more with firecracker noises and drums beats! I am so damned angry with these people! Angry... furious... you're barbarians! Good GOD... give these elephants some room to be elephants. StOP human encroachment.... please give these elephants space -- land of their own -- so they can be elephants.

Noted with such sadness. The people responsible for this horrific cruelty to the Elephant have lost their humanity and are a danger to society.
