Thanks, I have read this before and do my best to read ingredient labels (I also don't like high fructose corn syrup, which is almost guaranteed to come from GE corn) and some others. Writing the manufacturers that use palm oil in their products will help too.

I will not buy anything more with palm oil in it and, if we do find something in our pantry, I will call the company and let them know why this item will no longer be on my shopping list. We have been told for years that palm oil is unhealthy for us.I do not know why they insist on still using it.And now with the rain forests and the orangutans threatened, why don't they have the good sense to stop .I think the answer is greed and the love of money.I know I will not buy a product with palm oil in it.I recently checked the Tastykake pies ingredients and found palm oil listed. There went the chocolate eclair pie from my diet.We do not need products made with this life threatening oil.

EVERY time I go to the supermarket I READ all the INGREDIENTS of what I'm buying: if I buy chips, e.g., in some products there is a synthetic "Vegetable Oils" Label...........I leave it on the shelf; in some of them there is clearly written "PALM OIL" : I MAKE COMMENTS & THROW IT ON THE SHELF!!!!!!!!!! IF COMPANIES REALIZE WE DO NOT BUY PALM OIL PRODUCTS ANYMORE They EWILL TURN TO MORE SUSTAINABLE INGREDIENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES THEY USE PALM OIL BECAUSE IT'S THE CHEAPEST FOR THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS MEANS MONEY & GREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good comments and good article. Please also tell the buyers at your store that more and more people are aware of the negatives of palm oil and we will not be buying those products. Even the buyers of stores can pass the message on the manufacture representative. Stores do not want to be caught holding a large inventory of products that will not sell.

Thank you Michela for posting this article. I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO PURCHASE ANYTHING WHATSOEVER WITH PALM OIL AS AN IGREDIENT. I have been a member of RAN for years and years, and have joyfully done what could have landed me in jail. I am definately forwarding as this IS OF ENORMOUS IMPORTANCE TO ME. HUGE!!!!!!!!!!

I mean no disrespect, but I must say Linda is 1000% correct regarding the many benefits of coconut oil. It is now 11:45 pm, and I must get to bed withing 15 minutes. I will gladly come back tomorrow with a long, long list of benefits that Linda didn't mention.

I am quite pleased hearing people say they DO NOT purchase ANYTHING with Palm Oil. PattiCAKE you are such an inspiration...ALWAYS. I hope the people who say they "try" not to use Palm Oil will soon realize that this is only addiding to the Envirnomental DISTRUCTION, puting your personal reason above what could be the solution. I feel too many people feel they are sacraficing...I feel it is our DUTY. It is VERY easy to elilminate Palm Oil 100%.

I am sorry to sound so harsh...this is a VERY VERY VERY important issue to our Planet and peoples, and it is EXTREMELY close to my Heart.

As I said...I mean no disrespect to anyone. I wish everyone would take a baby step to be more aware. Holy Smokes...I am going to kick myself in the arse when I come back tomorrow. I do not like when I speak so harshly. For those of you who know me, I have been refered to as Ms. Peace and Love...anything to avoid conflict. I am willing to get scoled for being so judgemental. IT IS THAT URGENT, in my opinion. LOLA*HEART thank you dearly for the forward. Good night all and have a lovely week. I truly mean that.

It's me again! I just read every word from every person~ very carefully~ and sent many many many stars to many of you wonderful people. THE ANGER WAS OBVIOUSLY IN MY HEAD AND HEART, and I was unfair in my rant! Brenda, you are awesome for putting the care2petitionsite link up. I checked it out and signed beginning August. IT IS A SHAME AS A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO THERE WERE AT LEAST 5 OR 6 petitions being passed around in one fwd. I WILL TRY AND GET IT ORGANIZED, AS THERE ARE many orgs and many petitions! If I may say something to many of you who state the same frustration. That being that Palm Oil is hidden behind what the GR$$dy want to do. It is OUR responsibility to CHECK THE FACTS...EXACTLY LIKE OUR POLITICIANS WHO...WELL IT IS QUITE UNNECESSARY FOR ME TO EXPLAIN TO WHAT YOU INTELLIGENT PEOPLE KNOW. It is absolutely horrible that we must spend hours upon months upon years to find a wee bit of cleverly hidden TRUTH. Unfortunately that is what the country has come to. CORPORATIONS MAKE THE RULES.A Powerful Gr$$dy handful of @#$##$%@. Please subscribe to RAN. They cut through YEARS of lies!

Palm oil : a high saturated and light polyinsaturated oil, promotes heart diseases because it charges the blood with high concentrations of LDL cholesterol and apoliprotein B; just like trans fat does, or like cocoanut oil and animal fats.
For more information, type Palm oil in Wikipedia.

Sorry Michela my friend, but I am with Linda R. & my friend SuSanne P. on this one!
I have been using organic extra virgin coconut oil for about 5 years now as it is the very best money can buy health-wise. See links below.

Pure Virgin Coconut Oil | Fresh Shores Extra Virgin Coconut Oil *
Pure Virgin Coconut Oil is the recommended oil of Dr. Mercola. Experience the incredible health benefits of 100% organic Fresh Shores Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.
products.mercola.com/coconut%2Doil/ - Proxy - Highlight - 1 more top result from this site.

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil
The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, weight loss, maintaining cholesterol levels, stress relief, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism ...

Just do a search on cocoanut oil & see for yourself every one! There is a # of links on all the benefits associated in using extra virgin cocoanut oil. Maybe the palm oil ones that companies use in their products are the cheaper one which one should avoid by all means.

Sorry Michela my bad . I guess palm oil and coconut oil oil are not the same product . I thought they were but from the video it looks as if the palm oil nut is smaller than the coconut . I am not for deforestization for any reason !

But I do stand on coconut oil being very good for the hormona and thyroid as well as a whole lot of other things including your skin .

A reply to: Linda R., Sus OFFLINE, & Henriette M.: COCONUT OIL and PALM OIL ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS!!!!!
COCONUT Oil is extracted from the kernel or meat of coconut from the coconut palm Cocos nucifera; It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry; is very heat stable so it makes an excellent cooking and frying oil.
PALM Oil is extracted from the pulp of the fruit of the oil palm Elaeis guineensis; is semi-solid at room temperatures; contains several saturated and unsaturated fats in the forms of glyceryl laurate, myristate, palmitate, stearate, oleate ,linoleate, andlinolenate.
Health: Blood lipid and cholesterol effects
The U.S. Center for Science in the Public Interest said palm oil, which is high in saturated and low in polyunsaturated fat, promotes heart disease; report cited research that goes back to 1970 and metastudies; also said that The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, World Health Organization (WHO), and other health authorities have urged reduced consumption of palm oil. WHO states that there is convincing evidence that palmitic acid consumption contributes to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
A 2006 study supported by the National Institutes of Health and the USDA Agricultural Research Service concluded that palm oil is not a safe substitute for partially hydrogenated fats (trans fats) in the food industry, because palm oil results in adverse changes in the blood concentrations of LDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B just as trans fat does.

Palm oil has the lowest production cost of the major oils.......................................
Palm oil became a highly sought-after commodity by British traders, for use as an industrial lubricant for machinery during Britain's Industrial Revolution.
Palm oil formed the basis of soap products, such as Lever Brothers' (now Unilever) "Sunlight Soap", and the American Palmolive brand;

Is a common cooking ingredient in the tropical belt of Africa, Southeast Asia and parts of Brazil. Since Palm oil was of a lower quality than olive oil, it remained rare outside West Africa.
Its increasing use in the commercial food industry in other parts of the world is buoyed by its lower cost[ and the high oxidative stability (saturation) of the refined product when used for frying. Many processed foods contain palm oil as an ingredient.

Other uses
Derivatives of palmitic acid were used in combination with naphtha during World War II to produce napalm (aluminumnaphthenate and aluminum palmitate).
Can be used to create biodiesel,

Malaysia: as a major producer of palm oil, the Malaysian government is encouraging the production of biofuel feedstock and the building of palm oil biodiesel plants. Domestically, Malaysia is preparing to change from diesel to bio-fuels by 2008, including drafting legislation that will make the switch mandatory. Malaysia is the world's second largest exporter of palm oil. About 60% of palm oil exports from Malaysia are shipped to China, the European Union, Pakistan, United States and India. They are mostly made into cooking oil, margarine, specialty fats and oleochemicals
Indonesia: as of 2009, was the largest producer of palm oil, surpassing Malaysia in 2006, producing more than 20.9 million tonnes. The Indonesian aspires to become the world's top producer of palm oil. FAO data show production increased by over 400% between 1994–2004, to over 8.66 million metric tonnes. In addition to servicing traditional markets, Indonesia is looking to put more effort into producing biodiesel.
Cargill (sometimes operating through CTP Holdings of Singapore), is building new refineries and mills in Malaysia and Indonesia, expanding its Rotterdam refinery to handle 300,000 tpa of palm oil, acquiring plantations in Sumatra, Kalimantan, the Indonesian peninsula and Papua New Guinea.

Environmental Impact
Palm Oil production has been documented as a cause of substantial and often irreversible damage to the natural environment. Its impacts include: deforestation, habitat loss of critically endangered species such as the Orangutan and Sumatran Tiger, and a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions. very popular for biofuel, but the environmental impact from growing large quantities of oil palms has recently called the use of palm oil into question.
The pollution is exacerbated because many rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia lie atop peat bogs that store great quantities of carbon that are released when the forests are cut down and the bogs drained to make way for plantations. Environmental groups such as Greenpeace claim that the deforestation caused by making way for oil palm plantations is far more damaging for the climate than the benefits gained by switching to biofuel.

Knowledge is power.

Power seems to be directed only toward increasing stupidity. Especially when it comes to increase our ease and forget about everyone else especially the animals.

It may not be immediate, but whatever harm we do to others will return to us. Animals are the helpless others.

In April, Greenpeace had an online campaign against the use of palm oil by Nestle. I became suspicious of palm oil long long before receiving information from any ecological organization. In 1998, I saw "Made in Malaysia" on a can of palm oil. Boycotting is not as easy as it seems. A lot of products simply state "vegetable oil". What I find particularly unacceptable is when products at "health food" shops, labelled as "organic" or "eco", and aimed at vegan and ethical consumers contain palm oil. (It is just as bad as when, for example, cruelty-free shampoo comes in a PVC bottle which I do not know where to recycle). There are some wafers that I buy from a household Croatian brand; unlike competing brands, they are vegan. It says "vegetable oil (soya and/or sunflower and/or palm oil)". I finally wrote them a letter today but have yet to send it. Ironically, I always get "bogged" on something from Care2 and have been putting of writing that letter since May! If I were to avoid all processed food, it would mean less time for activism and/or food sometimes going to waste. Regarding soap, I use hair shampoo as refill for liquid soap because the PET bottle and PP lid are easy to recycle. I hope that the sodium laureth sulfate is neither from animal fat or palm oil. Writing a letter, even just one, to a company that uses palm oil is a good idea. It does not have to be now, but whenever the opportunity arises. (I will copy this comment to the linked article).

Very true, Simon..."organic" and "eco" have become such trendy terms that, unfortunately, one cannot always be so certain that companies that market these products are being completely sincere with consumers...Just have to try our best to keep eyes and ears open...

Sending a Green Star is a simple way to say "Thank you"

You cannot currently send a star to Simon because you have done so within the last week.

very good, Simon! I have been emailing major companies, mainly manufacturers of margarine brands I was using. They answered back admitting the use of palmoil, BUT REFERING TO THEIR RSPO certificate, which is nothing but an excuse and a greenwash-lie. THERE IS NO SUSTAINABLE PALMOIL planted as monocultures.

Please always check the ingredients for palm oil! If ingredients are not listed (as in some personal care products), write the company for an ingredient list before buying.

The following link is to a list of products that contain palm oil. The list is long but probably not exhaustive, so check every product just in case - even if you think it couldn't possibly contain palm oil. Some of the items on the list are very surprising!

http://ran.org/fileadmin/materials/rainforest_ag/tpwpo/list_of_palm_products_20090917.pdf

Tell you friends and family! Each of us can make a difference!

Thank you very much for this valuable information Michaela.

What food sellers (big & small) should do is label the ingredients correctly and state the type of vegetable oil they use in the product. This will enable consumers the world over to make an informed choice as to whether or not they would want to purchase a product which is the by product of the destruction of precious habitat and the wildlife within it.

It is sad to say that education to consumers of the horrendous ramifications of using palm oil goods is barely there and such needs to be addressed very strongly and publicly. After all, Consumers have the right to know and to make an informed choice.

The greediness and crueltiness of mankind literally makes me sick ! ! Food items should have to be clearly and honestly labeled. All the decption to hide the stuff which is bad for us is ridiculous. IF it's bad then they should STOP using and STOP trying to feed it to us. I have been using extra virgin olive oil for several years now and would not go back to regular 'vegetable oil'.
