Australia has not experienced a mass shooting in over 20 years, because of strong gun control. Add your name if you want to adopt their gun laws in the USA, and put an end to mass shootings in America for good!

Thanks for posting this, Freya
And thanks, Animae, for sharing a link to here!!

Those who ferociously defend the right for any Tom, Dick or Harry to tote arms (including military grade arms that are REALLY only designed for use against humans) keep telling us that this is necessary in order to protect people.

There are over THIRTEEN THOUSAND people who could witness to the fact that it didn't make it safer during 2017 ... except, of course, they're no longer with us to give witness to their experience at the receiving end of such weapons.

And for all that "protection" - ONE THIRD OF MASS SHOOTINGS GLOBALLY occur in the USA.

Forgive me for doubting that lax gun controls ensure protection!!!

The laws that are in place now would have prevented the Texas lunatic from acquiring guns legally. The lunatic was in prison in the Air Force for domestic abuse. The Air Force was required to give his name to the Federal authorities. The Air Force failed in their duty to report this. The system failed the victims in Texas. The lunatic gunman was stopped by an heroic armed citizen. .

Thank you for signing.

While I agree with what Mike H stated on here, many failures along the way, the point is at the end of the day, why do we sell military assault weapons to begin with. It is these semi automatic weapons that unload large amounts of bullets within seconds that is killing so many people.

These are not hunters rifles or some pistol one would keep in their house for protection. Had there been a rifle or pistol he'd have had to reload giving the people a chance to escape or attack him before he could kill so many people.

"The DPS official Martin said that an armed local citizen confronted Kelley, who was dressed in black “tactical type gear,” as the gunman left the scene. The gunman later crashed his vehicle near the county line, where he was found dead, after two locals gave chase. It is unclear if he died of a self-inflicted wound or was shot by the citizen who confronted him.

In an interview with local ABC-affiliate KSAT, local resident Johnnie Langendorff said he was driving past the church and witnessed the gunman exchanging fire with a member of the community, who asked for help and climbed into Langendorff’s truck.

The two pursued the gunman at high speed, as police were going in the opposite direction, toward the church, AP reported.

“[The gunman] eventually lost control on his own, and went off in a ditch. The gentleman that was with me got out, and rested his rifle on my hood, and kept it aimed at him, telling him to ‘Get out, get out’. There was no movement … So he might have been unconscious from the crash, something like that, I’m not sure,” Langendorff said."

My grandson is having surgery this morning and I wasn't into picking straws with Mike.

No the church shootings didn't get stopped, however some feel, if the citizens hadn't shown up he would have gone to another spot and done more shootings. Maybe - maybe not. That is the "straw" spot.

I do agree with the other points of laws already existing were not followed. Had they been followed we might not have had this particular tragedy. However, we need to stop selling weapons of war that shoot horrendous amounts of bullets out within seconds and do horrid damage to the body when hit, cutting down on survival rates.

I hope that better clarifies. Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything this morning.

Mike -
Let's get something straight.

There are some laws in place, but clearly NOT sufficient.

a) As Dandelion says - such weapons are heavy duty. Not "sporting" - so WHY should they be available?
b) The laws do NOT provide a secure system of automatic information sharing between different parts of the System, to prevent dangerous people from buying weapons. Army records of such cases are not AUTOMATICALLY shared with the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System database of those who should not be allowed to purchase weapons in gun stores.
c) The laws do NOT cover gun fairs ... a huge loophole.

So - there may be laws, but clearly not sufficient.

So if you're happy with the fact that the US has such a massive lead in gun-related deaths "since laws are there that should be sufficient" - well, the NRA must love you. Your position is great for their profits.

But 13,000 (and counting) persons in the US who were alive at the beginning of 2017 are no longer in this world to tell you their points of view

Thursday November 9, 2017, 6:37 pm
Animae get your facts straight. NO ONE shot the madman after he went into a ditch. He shot himself. The heroic citizen, Stephen Willeford, shot him at the church and then the coward drove away. Then Willeford and another citizen chased the madman, risking their lives, until he crashed into a ditch. A woman who was at the scene said this "Hernandez said church neighbors “were running for cover” because the gunman was firing at people who were watching him. She said an unidentified church neighbor “returned fire” and that is when “[the gunman] got back into his vehicle and left the scene.” http://www.breitbart.com/texas/2017/11/05/texas-church-attacker-fled-good-guy-gun-shot/ also see this https://youtu.be/B4HEchh0XD8 Please stick with the FACTS

You are getting your facts from breitbart, LOL!

"Breitbart News Network is a far-right American news, opinion and commentary website founded in 2007 by conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart. The site has published a number of falsehoods and conspiracy theories, as well as intentionally misleading stories. Its journalists are ideologically driven and some of its content has been called misogynist, xenophobic and racist."

How the shooter was stopped is irrelevant as this juncture,
Most shooters self-inflict rather than face a trial. More importantly,
is how in this massively populated country, the government deals with
home-grown terrorists, imported terrorists, street crimes and permit
carrying hunters. All packing assault weapons that can be very easily
obtained. Guns can be purchased through department stores, auctions,
gun shows and sports shops or obtained by handed-down, stolen, and
through illegal street dealers/gun runners. It is a vast undertaking to
control a monumentally staggering amount of fire arms. A conundrum
for the government.
Thank you Freya & Animae.

It never ceases to amaze me, and not in a good way-----the mind set of some people. The 2nd Amendment does not mean innocent people can be murdered by the mentally deranged allowed to purchase guns. Americans killing Americans......this MUST STOP..

The Republicans will do nothing to help make things safe for us. They are the ones who voted state by state to put these laws in place. Sadly, they will do nothing to make it safer, they are getting too rich. They will do nothing until their families and their own lives are in jeopardy. Thanks for the post, and Thanks, Ken for the share.

No we do not. How many times do we have to explain the facts. The guns are not the issue and giving up this essential liberty will not solve the issue or make you safe. Just because it is working for now in Australia does not mean it is a sustainable plan. And there are far more countries where it is not working for the people, where they have become fodder for gangs or worse their own government.

Adding some of my comments from today on this topic:
http://www.care2.com/causes/michigan-senate-thinks-its-a-good-idea-to-have-more-guns-in-churches-and-schools.html

Fact #1: It's a fact that almost all mass shootings happen in "gun free" zones. Of course criminals don't follow those rules.
Fact #2: Almost all mass shootings are stopped are at least interrupted when they encounter the 1st armed resistance. It doesn't matter if that is a government or private armed person.

Common sense is not so common.

The shooting in California last week could have been much worse had the shooter gotten into the school. Had they not had the warning and time to lockdown the school it would have been much worse.

What is wrong with having a church or school having individuals that are pre-screened, approved and trained to conceal carry?

In an active shooter situation seconds count. How long does it take for the cops to get there if nobody is armed on site?

Stop and think people.

@Dandelion G "However, we need to stop selling weapons of war that shoot horrendous amounts of bullets out within seconds and do horrid damage to the body when hit, cutting down on survival rates. "

You should know better, machine guns have been illegal for the average citizen to buy for a long time. And these guns have not been used in mass shootings. Yes guns are very dangerous in the wrong hands yet we trust the government to have them?

Meanwhile Germany is seeing a spike in violence with knives being the weapon of choice. Once again guns are not the issue, it is the people. If only it was as simple as banning a certain type of weapon.
