A new street drug has Ottawa police on alert and working hard to learn more. Police say an illegal powder known as bath salts, is a new drug trend that could soon be seen in Ottawa, even though no seizures have been made in the capital.

This is a terrible assault on younger persons. Calling something "bath salts" implies that it's harmless.

Legalize cocaine again and it won't be an issue.

I've heard of this. I think it would be very helpful if we educated people better about recreational drugs and made more of the safer ones legal. We already have three legal recreational drugs: caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. While any of those can be abused, and abuse of any of those can cause death, many people use caffeine and alcohol safely, and a small number of people use nicotine safely. People who abuse drugs - of any form - need medical help. But there are numerous other recreational drugs that are about as safe as alcohol or caffeine, and several that are as safe as nicotine, and they'd all be safer if sold legally such that they can be regulated and you could be sure of what you were trying. If we made these options available, then fewer people might experiment with more dangerous drugs, and fewer people would be harmed by not taking what they thought they were taking. We could also pair it with more education about drug use, so that fewer people might get addicted to caffeine while not even thinking about the fact that they are abusing a drug. Legal status is not what makes a drug safe or dangerous, and we because we make various reasonably safe drugs illegal, it is difficult to discuss what the real dangers are and how to recognize them.

It's never the drugs that have the "true/absolute" happiness inside of them, it's the people who do. Sadly, however, many people don't know how to bring that happiness to the surface, and instead use drugs trying to fill the void they inevitably feel inside them.

And, of course, some people abuse food in an atempt to fill that same void. Hopefully, people will some day learn that their true happiness is NOT dependant on anything external, and instead is an incredible life condition welling forth from the depths of our lives.

What matters most is the heart.
