Let's change the way we see bats! To see how much you really know about bats, take the BBC quiz. My score was 'Bat-tastic'

Sometimes, we'll head up to the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge up in Austin, TX. I think that it's the largest bat colony living under the bridge in the world.
Thank you, Bella for this.

Didn't do too bad--thought i'd do worse. So sad many bats perished in Toronto this past winter as it was frigid non-stop cos of the Polar Vortex. Thx Bella

We had bats on our back porch that would come out at dusk. One evening as I sat in my wheelchair waiting for my family to join me, I saw a small black wing fluttering under a small rock my Mom had in her rock garden. Everyone came out, all talking to each other at once. I finally got my big brother's attention: 'There's a black wing under that rock....looks like it's struggling...'

'Well, let's just see what it is,' my brother answered. 'Oh I see what it is. It's a bat.' When the females heard the word 'bat' they all banned together leaving me out. LOL 'Now girls, it's just a bat. He's more scared of YOU than you are of HIM.' he informed them. One of my sisters realized they'd left me out of their Group of Chickens and hoovered over me. My big brother slowly lifted the rock and sure 'nuff, a bat shot out. Poor little thing kept going around in circles trying to get his bearings. And of course, we all screamed...LOL But after the initial shock of seeing it fly around in circles we felt sorry for it and named it 'Bat Wally' because it kept running into the garden wall. From then on, whenever we'd go out at dusk, and saw 'Bat Wally' flying above our heads we always screamed at first, because he scared the bejewels out of us, and then we'd talk to him :)

Thanks Bonnie :)

Noted. Thanks Bella. We had one in our apartment a few weeks ago. Not afraid of bats when we're outside (me AND the bat), but it's another story when it's fluttering in the hallway. It stayed the night, sleeping in the folds of a curtain. My husband opened a window and it left. Happeened once before, a couple of years ago. Cannot figure out how they get in!

Got 2/6...good for a city girl who used to scream when I'd get "dive-bombed" from fear they'd get in my hair. Have learned alot since then, especially how good they are at eating insects. Thanks Bella.

I love bats. They're such fascinating creatures. I like to go out around dusk and watch them flit around. And we have a bat house :) I learned that bats love ripe bananas. so we put them out for them to enjoy.

Interesting article and yes very delicate necessary animals bats are for our environment, great pollinators along with the bees. They need our devotion, understanding care and protection.

I have always liked bats, and it upsets me whenever a person's first reaction to seeing a bat is to try to kill it.

Loved the story. We used to have bats around the cities here but for some reason, I guess it's the flooding of cement everywhere, they are more confined now to our cave systems more to the central highlands of Puerto Rico. I didn't dare yet to take the quiz until I read a little more about the subject!

I love bats - round here we were taught that bats eat around 600 insects each a night - that could be 600 midges and mosquitoes that would otherwise bite us or our animals - gotta love that!
