There is basic information about factory farming that everyone should know. You should know where your food is coming from. And you should know the livelihoods of the animals used to produce that food.

Disgracelfull. Hens or any animals should never be treated like that. Complete tack of sanitation too.

The following was addressed to those posting on the other thread who apparently don't believe the evidence of cruelty to chickens in battery farming: "Whatever HSUS motives in common with Peta and now the The Big Cat Rescue they are being targeted by those who feel threatened by their actions. For example apart from the big ag pharma oil and tobacco chemicals etc sponsored websites set up with specific job of discrediting the likes of Peta by duping animal lovers environmentalists etc into believing a whole raft of untruths about the target organisations. Care2 is currently carrying a petition against the Big Cat rescue using some dubious claims and sponsored by a group that supports keeping lions and tigers in your backyard etc I do not believe Care2 should be facilitating such harassment of legitimate sanctuaries or providing a platform for the promotion of various petitions and groups supporting animal cruelty and abuse! No doubt some would see that attitude as a balance however that argument could equally be used by Nazis or peodophiles who wished to peddle their form of nasty abuse! Chickens deserve better treatment and obfuscating the evidence by besmirching the messenger does chickens no service!"

OH I can't watch! I have seen videos before and i just can't watch. I agree with all it is so cruel. My son always says, how would people like it if some hugh chicken came up to you and just bopped you on the head. Sometimes kids are so much more wiser! I do eat meat mostly chicken and turkey, but I DO NOT condone any abuse to ANY animal it shold not be done. The logic is messed up when people say well there going to die any way, I hate this kind of comment. People are just evil. I am learning so much about organic and family run farms. Thank you for this article. It just makes me sick and more eagert o pay a few bucks more for better meat. So now my question is, is organic meat better is there less cruelty?

I am not surprised by the cruelty that goes on in these factory farming places - the sheer numbers of birds that have to be looked after by a pathetically small number of staff deem it impossible for the most basic requirements of the birds to be provided.
And you say there are people that don't believe this goes on? Sheesh!! They are either living in cloud cuckoo land, or have some darker motive for coming out with such lies. Unfortunately, I suspect the latter.
In the UK, many supermarkets are now stocking only eggs from free range eggs. I'm sad to see that this is one of those unusual cases where the US is lagging behind us rather than the other way round.

I would love to have a regular column that gives the brand names of cruelty free animal products.... eggs, meat, etc. I know that would be helpful to ME because I would definitely request these products at the stores that I purchase from. Is anyone up for doing that?

More and more people are starting their own back yard chicken farm, however small that may be, for exactly this reason. Breeding farms, as cruel as they are of any kind, are there to fill the need to feed 300+ million people in the USA alone. There is almost no time for humane breeding/producing at all, hence the reason why so many organizations urge people in general to become either vegan or vegetarian.

Each person who thinks and feels this type of breeding or producing is disgusting, cruel, in-humane etc., should lead by example and make the CHANGE!!!!

We have, you can too!!!! Do it NOW!!!

After learing about practices like this some years ago, I started buying eggs from a local Farmer's Co-Op where the animals are treated humanely.

I will not eat eggs unless I can get them from someone I know who cares for their own hens and I know for a fact that they are cruelty-free. I'm nearly vegan, trying to be completely vegan. My husband and I were eating humane certified eggs from Whole Foods Market until I read that "humane-certified" doesn't mean much. I called the egg producer (Egg Innovations) and was told that the hens are debeaked. They do, however, have windows so they can see the outdoors. I bet they are yearning to get out there and have their beaks back so they can peck for food normally. People need to stop eating eggs so that egg producers get the message that inflicting cruelty on sentient beings is unacceptable. In the 80's, the TV show 20/20 did an expose' on factory farmed eggs. They even showed the male chicks being pulverized. My mother and I stopped buying eggs then, and I thought so many people would see the program that the atrocity of factory farmed eggs would cease. I guess there are too many morons who don't give a damn because "it's a chicken".

The only eggs I will eat are those from my own backyard chooks - ex-battery hens who were a sad and sorry sight when they came to me, almost bald, totally traumatised, and walking on the dirt like they were walking on the moon - a completely new experience for them .
But now with feathers almost grown back, they are becoming more confident and cheeky each day - although one poor little thing is at the bottom of the pecking order through her own neurotic behaviour of screeching hysterically and attracting attention to herself, and hiding behind my legs for protection - she actually likes to be picked up and carried around.

Chris - could you post the link to that other thread you referred to - I haven't seen that one.

I have given up eating all flesh and eggs. I feel so sorry for these poor animals. If I could raise the hens myself and know that they are treated well and humanely, then I would enjoy eggs again. Or could find a local farmer that I trust. Just heard that farmers now cut cow's tails off for the farmer's convenience. Yikes. Such cruelty.

Thank you, Brenda, for sharing this with all. I am an avid member of HSUS and factory farming is probably one of my greatest crusades. And I salute Chris B. for all that he has posted here as well regarding efforts to besmerch both HSUS and PETA which is completely wrong.

Factory farming is brutal & cruel. We all need to present a UNIFIED voice against it as the agribusiness lobbies are wealthy & powerful & do not hesitate to influence our legislators on a local & national level. Although ASPCA, PETA & HSUS have their faults, they all increase the public's awaremess of these types of animal atrocitioes! - (I am surprised that there is not a petition linked to his article.)

Sadly noted, I don't eat many eggs, but buy cage free when I do get them. I hate these factory farms running things in the food supply.

Well there you have it, greed strikes again. Our society just continues to sink lower and lower into the cesspool of greed. We can all help by finding local farmers and buying all we can from them. Fresh eggs are simply better for you and then we don't contribute to this madness. Support our local farmers and we are taking one step toward stopping the factory farming.
