Tens of thousands of innocent civilians are trapped in a shrinking 3 square kilometer (1.6 miles) conflict zone - bombarded by government artillery, and used as human shields by the rebels. Will you do something to stop this madness?...Sign the petition?

Tens of thousands of innocent civilians are trapped in a shrinking 3 square kilometer (1.6 miles) conflict zone - bombarded by government artillery, and used as human shields by the rebels. The Japanese government, Sri Lanka's largest donor and closest regional partner has the power to help stop this humanitarian disaster.

Act now by sending a pre-translated message below (visit site) to the office of Japanīs Foreign Minister Nakasone. The message (right, in Japanese) calls on the Japanese government to:

- demand that all citizens are protected from harm;
- push for UN Security Council access to the conflict zone and the capacity to deliver urgent humanitarian aid; and
- ensure Japan's aid achieves real peace and human rights.
Add your own personal message (optional) above the Japanese text (in the box to the right). Or just press send and an email will be sent on your behalf!...

Do you care a little, or don't you care at all?...

Someone 'out there' needs your help, is it so impossible for you to give it?...One day, so far away, YOU may well be at the mercy of your government ...In such a case would you not like someone to help you?...Why not sign this petition in the hope that your simple signature might save the life of one person?...

Signed and sent, of course, David.
This has been going on for months
in Sri Lanka, always getting worse.
I've been following it on BBC World
Service...no one else in the states
seems to be talking much about it.
I was relieved to see this petition.

I hate to have to say this, but, unfortunately, it wont make much difference at all. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has repeatedly stated that he is not interested to end this war until the total destruction of the Tamil Tigers is accomplished or if they surrender. He further stated that he "does not need lectures from Western reprentatives." He further said that he had no intention to call off the military. This is still his stance now. So, what can be done if he continues with this attitude - short of invading Sri Lanka - NOTHING MUCH... Terrible situation.

It IS a terrible situation but trying to do something, anything, is better than doing nothing. Unfortunately you are probably right about the effect. Still, I am signing.

Thanks Dave, I've signed. Instead of the nations of the world concentrating on protecting their lifestyles they must look outward and offer and hand whenever their involvement can make a small or a significant difference. I believe this is one of those critical times.

Hands have been offered ABA and "bitten" instead of accepted. Both the british and french foreign ministers, as well as the japanese special mediator Yasushi Akashi's efforts have been brushed aside as interference in a sovreign country's affairs by the gorvernment of Sri Lanka. "One can take a horse to the water, but one can't make it drink" That is the unfortunate reality here.

I did sign the petition in the hope that it will help in some way.
