In the current American political landscape, truth is not merely misrepresented or falsified; it is overtly mocked. As is well known, the Bush administration repeatedly lied to the American public, furthering a legacy of government mistrust.

Even if Obama has lied.. one must realise that you have a difficult jorney ahead after Bush's demise, even in failures and lies, things can be overcome and corrected.. as Americans you decide... no it no good having this immense bickering going on as it does not solve the problem.. but by hard work these things can be correctd and you as the people take responsibility...

Powerful article. There are things Obama has learned AFTER becoming president: 1) promises made during the campaign may not be carried out because of the powers that hold the strings behind the presidency, 2) he needs the support of congress, 3) corporations and special interests hold more power than he may be able to break.

After reading Obama's books, I firmly believe he is very liberal in his views, but must cater to the center in order to get some of his agenda through. We can all say what he should, would or could do, but being in the hot seat with the barriers before him is another matter.

While this writer makes a brilliant statement, he too misinforms by not telling of the barriers Obama faces.

The lies of one administration carry to the next and so on and so on. The big talk of million dollar campaigns get the vote but then reality sets in that you are not going to accomplish anything more than the last person did no matter how good your intentions are. American has been forever damaged and changed by the Bush presidency. President Obama inherited a toxic mess of lies and deception. I don't think he will be able to do anything he promised. and it seems here lately that he's only interested in getting stuff pushed thru congress and is willing to cause more harm than good to do it. I have voted in every election since the age of 18 but I will honestly say..I doublt I will make the trip to the polls next election because nothing ever changes.

Obama did not lie. The promises he made during the campaign were really the bases of his agenda. He is being faced with obstacles that are beyond his control.

I really wish people would wake up and realize that not everything started with the Bush administration and it has not ended with the Obama administation, cuz guess what, he is sure to be telling a lie or to himself. It's getting old. Truth be told, our goverment has a history of lieing to the people since the constitution was signed. Decades of lies have finally caught up and thanks to the ability to share information live time the lies just reach more people. Give it a rest, maybe more energy could be spent trying to move forward instead of focusing on what ever tool held office in the past, we let this happen by turning the cheek and listening to what people told us to believe.

The politics of lying and deceit at the current historical moment offers up the specter of not just government abuse, mob hysteria and potential violence, but also an incipient authoritarianism, one that avidly seeks to eliminate intelligent deliberation, informed public discussion, engaged criticism and the very possibility of freedom and a vital democratic politics

If the Emergency internet bill gets passed - what chance will there be of intelligent deliberation and informed public discussion? The public is already being kept in the dark as much as possible eg the enforced swine flu vaccination, the bracelet, the discussions on the Patriot Act etc etc. The public NEED to stand up and be counted before it is too late.

I see pundits all the time lying all day long with a straight face. They are usually republican strategists. The other day one guy got called on his lies and he GRINNED really big like this is just a big game! My brain has two columns, one for liars and one for those I think I can trust what they say. Thank goodness our brains can categorize liars, saves lots of time!

Excellent comment, Dragonfly! These lies are dangerous and steadily eroding the civility and dignity of this nation. Who needs enemies when we continue to erode from within?

This is what happens when pundits and right wing rhetoric incites the village idiots...
