This widespread SYSTEMIC problem is one of the reasons for us end capitalism and replace it with democratic socialism: an increase in participation in democracy (direct democracy, where everyone discusses and votes on policies, instead of merely electing people to rule over us), and an expansion of democracy into the capitalist economic sphere, which is totalitarian. This means sharing out humanity's wealth and power equally! : )

Capitalism: an experiment that failed badly. Americans like to think we are so progressive. By accepting and buying into this corrupt system, we are merely sheep repeating the mistakes of past failed civilizations that crashed and burned. And while it's easy to be arm chair critics about the system, those who consume irresponsibly, fail to get involved to change the system, waste, pollute, neglect one's health and live an unsustainable lifestyle, therein lies much of the problem. This monster could not have been created without our help.

I'm inclined to agree with Simon, however, we do not have capitalism here in the U.S. We have a bastard hybrid that is in effect capitalism for people and socialism for corporations.
