Canada, the only parliamentary democracy in the Commonwealth where a government has been found in contempt of Parliament, is now the only democracy in the world where a government bureaucrat can suppress scientific research.

The ONLY democracy? Um, how about looking south of that long border? That might as well be the situation here in the US of A.

I hope that Harper gets his political @$$ handed to him in Canada's next election.

Harper believes in Silence Is Golden. He has eliminated the long form census, it is no longer mandatory. He doesn't want to be bothered with stats involving poverty and annoying social situations that his 'government' wishes to sweep under the Con-serve-it-ive rug. If we don't have the statistics then we don't have the information to base policy on...such as poverty for instance.

Looking forward to the next election.

The Harper Regime is doing much more than having scientists adhere to the party line. They are being muzzled, plain and simple. Harper's policy is as follows: "Don't like the message - shoot the messenger." And he does so with gleeful abandon.

What we have here in Canada is a war on science. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Harper was trained as an economist and harbours feelings of inadequacy from not studying a "real" science such as physics, chemistry, or biology. He seems much more content dealing with the "realities" of market forces, rather than dealing with the sound scientific evidence of what we are doing to our environment.

He finds it much more comfortable to rely on his narrow-minded, neo-conservative ideology to guide him in forming government policy. After all, why else would he be toughening up the criminal code and building new prisons when statistics show that the crime rate in Canada is dropping?

Who is in right mind mind would appoint a Minister of Science and Technology (hello Gary Goodyear) who doesn't believe in, much less understand the theory of evolution? That's right - the minister in charge of doling out money to do fundamental medical research, doesn't understand the fundamental concept underlying all of the biological sciences. How much contempt for science do you have to have to do such a thing?

Science shines a light on the world around us. We are all the better for those scientists who have come before us, enriching our lives with technological advances, treatments for diseases, and a greater understanding of the natural world in which we live. The Harper Regime's attempts to stifle the diffusion of knowledge obtained through scientific inquiry are no different than the Catholic Church's misguided persecution of Galileo hundreds of years ago.

Those who wallow in willful ignorance will eventually pay the price for their short-sighted stupidity. Harper is no different.
