This new medical pen works by ejecting a droplet of water onto a tissue sample, waiting for the water to absorb surrounding chemicals, and then sucking the droplet back up.

So the catch is that the pen is relatively cheap, but must be used with mass spectrometers. The cost of those is prohibitive, so some alternative method must be developed before we could see this device in widespread use. Thanks Lone.
