As clearly documented in the new short web video "Hearts on the Ground," by Sundance award-winning director Kalyanee Mam (just released at www.LakotaLaw.org/action), the epidemic of child taking by the State of South Dakota is tearing thousands ...

Taking children from their families and communities is a form of cultural genocide. It didn't work in Canada, and it's not working in South Dakota either. Empower these communities to keep their children at home through supportive initiatives.

Noted and Signed. It's amazing to me that no other ethnic group would tolerate being told there was a separate "bureau" to deal with them, or having their lives continually monitored and controlled as the Bureau of Indian Affairs does. It needs to be disbanded, and First Peoples respected equally to any other group.

These little ones are likely to become criminals to strike back at the country that took away their parents, their brothers and sisters, their friends. They are not given hugs and the love of their own people.

So is that what the authorities want? To add more criminals to our society? Heartbroken criminals?

Could they be that stupid....it would distract us, maybe, from the criminals we put into political office.

In this case "maybe" is not the word. We still have the ability to discern.

We still have a voice, though at risk. We raise our voices to defend the children.

Ty Frans and Carole for the fwd ~ signed with heart for the Lakota People and disgust that this shameful saga of violating and dishonoring the treaties to the continuing catastrophic determent of so many 1ST Nations people still goes on to this day ...

"... Had the Indian been as completely subdued in spirit as he was in body he would have perished within the century of his subjection. But it is the unquenchable spirit that has saved him - his clinging to Indian ways, Indian thought, and tradition, that has kept him and is keeping him today. The white man's ways were not his ways and many of the things that he has tried to adopt have proven disastrous and to his utter shame. ..."

"... So if today I had a young mind to direct, to start on the journey of life, and I was faced with the duty of choosing between the natural way of my forefathers and that of the white man's present way of civilization, I would, for its welfare, unhesitatingly set that child's feet in the path of my forefathers. I would raise him to be an Indian!" ―Ota K'Te/Mochunozhin [Chief Luther Standing Bear], (1905-1939) Oglala Lakota

"Just as a man would not cherish living in a body other than his own, so do nations not like to live under other nations, ..." ―Mohandas K. Gandhi

Signed. Thanks Frans and *C* for forwarding. It's a shame that respect for the Lakota culture is lacking in such a serious situation. We create a situation where native peoples are living in poverty and then reject their homes as suitable for fostering their children. Terrific, America! (and I'm American, by the way.)

Gladly signed -- albeit a little late -- as I work so much, I don't have a lot of extra time anymore for much of anything else and am going through my Care2 emails from the past several months. I am part Native American -- Muscogee Creek and Cherokee -- and white and I LOVE the Native American peoples!! Slavery ended a long time ago -- Native Americans are the First Peoples of the United States and should be treated with respect and reverence! I would sign this petition a thousand times if I could!

Update

Just two days ago, I received an e-mail from the 'Lakota People's Law Project,' asking, "Please find it in your heart to support our cause to bring the Lakota children back to their communities by purchasing our holiday gift pack."

They also request we sign their petition Free the Lakota Children, to be delivered to President Barack Obama. Although this petition was posted to C2NN several times by different C2 members, the fact that the Lakota People's Law Project includes the link to it in their Dec 17, 2014 message clearly means that more signatures are needed.

More has to be done to promote it!

The background information provided on the petition page refers to the short film, "Hearts On The Ground" - "South Dakota's Forced Taking of Lakota Children": Bring Lakota Children Home (posted almost exactly a year ago on YouTube), which opens with this heartbreaking Native American proverb, "A nation is not conquered until the hearts of its women are on the ground."

The era of residential Indian schools may be over, but Native American families are still being torn apart, children are still being forcibly, LEGALLY & illegitimately separated from their parents & families: now they are put into foster homes!

"Every day, Lakota grandmothers are illegally denied their right to foster their own grandchildren. The South Dakota Dept. of Social Services rejects grandmothers for such trivial reasons as too few rooms in a home, too small of a home, too old, decades old crimes, and even rumors.

South Dakota continues to violate the federal law by placing 90% of the 750 Lakota foster children it seizes each year into non-Native homes and facilities, instead of with relatives or tribal homes. Both federal law and the United Nations define this behavior as genocide. Only tribal programs are placing foster children with their relatives."

The tragedy continues!

We must raise our voices to put an end to it!
