State and local budget crises and the election of anti-government ideologues have left taxpayers and communities increasingly vulnerable to predatory "privatization" of government services and public infrastructure.

A new report from People For the American Way documents that the push to privatize public services and assets often reduces the quality of services, burdens taxpayers and threatens democratic government.
There is a lack of accountability to the public by the private firms --- the examples in the article read like a rape and pillage of the public purse. In some areas, for example British Columbia, there are public-private partnerships that cover major highways, transit, bridges etc, but how accountable are they when contracts have conditions like those seen in the article?

When greedy people are in charge, the result is usually less than acceptable for everyone else. I've seen privatization at work; on a rare occasion it works, mostly it does not.

The IMF and World Bank and their cronies the Fortune 500 are largely responsible for corruption in governments that lead to the mass privatisation (theft) of national assets. How on Earth can anyone justify the nonsense that it is somehow the fault of "anti-tax ideology"?

We've long known that privatization of government run operations was coming and those on the right who have been planning and plotting shouldn't be referred to as the "right wing think tank" but rather the "right wing wink tank". The political right have colluded with their big corporate buddies in an effort to not only bring all unions to their knees but to undo government as we know it, even though it's become over the years a far less familiar entity than the American government citizens of this country trusted and looked to for ethical and moral standards in governing. George W. Bush made the big push to privatize social security in 1982 and again after inhabiting the White House. Then the big push to reward buddies of Dick Cheney's with no bid contracts (like Blackwater) that would put the screws to our troops in the military. Troops went into the field poorly equipped, were charged excessive prices for basic goods and services, and the use of these contractors undermined the integrity of what America was 'supposed to stand for' with absolutely no oversight and the U.S. Government an inability to prosecute because they were "private contractors". There crimes were horrid and don't think for a minute that those same kinds of crimes won't happen in this country with the privatization of much of what has always been handled through the government. Even with the repeal of Glass-Steagall, without oversight, big banks have been allowed to run roughshod over American citizens and to commit fraud without so much as any of the Wall Street Ceo's held accountable for their criminal actions. And why should anyone be surprised since this right wing party of no has been so hell bent on insisting big government doesn't work. We have to take back America before there is nothing to take back. I can assure you that with privatization, the right wing won't be telling us that we no longer need to pay taxes. They are already pushing for the middle class tax breaks to expire.
