Are you a dog person or a cat person? It's likely that you align yourself with one of these labels, and research shows that your preference for one animal or the other reveals a bit about your personality.

I stumbled across this story and was intrigued. I am definitely a cat person having 3 little fur babes that I love dearly, and a long history of cat companions or kids as I call them. But I wondered about this cat people vs dog people aspect that I hear about so often. I really have to say that for me, while not 100% accurate, there sure is a lot of truth in this for me. How about you?

This article makes a lot of sense; although I question the random facts.
I grew up with dogs, and I wish I had the time to walk one. They are more demanding than cats, which is why I have 3.I must have an animal in my house.
My dream is when I retire, the first thing I'm going to do is get a dog.

Lovely article though it only tells part of the picture - how about those households that have (like myself and many of my friends) BOTH cats and dogs - a lovely combination we think! I may be somewhere in the middle - and Everybody loves Raymond is definitely not in even my top 100 programmes - Frasier and Yes, Prime Minister come first - I must be partly a cat person (loving wit and irony) and partly a dog person(!) Meeowoof!

This is a teaser article. Good points but it makes the mind hungry for a more serious in-depth analysis. Had to chuckle over cat people naming George as their fave Beatle though - guilty as charged! =^..^=

I am a 1 dog cat person. As a kid I had the world's greatest mutt for about 12 years of my life and no dog could ever replace him though my parents tried. I considered him my little brother in a permanent dog suit. He was a fearless box turtle hunter (never hurt them) and lollipop thief who according to my brother also was also guilty of wrecking my brother's bike. Dad told him not to let the dog ride it without training wheels next time. LOL. Must have worked-dog never wrecked the bike again.

I thnk it's circumstance -where you live -first encounter that makes you either a cat or dog person ,mine was dogs -then cats then all animals which I love with a passion,my family say if it doesn't have a tail -mum's not interested,as a child my home life wasn't the best -but as long as I had my dog -I always had a friend and company and that has continued all my life ,those who are cruel to animals are the losers as they will never know the love and devotion you get from having -an animal as part of your life -I prefer my animals to -some people.

What if you're an animal person? I love cats. I love dogs. I love mice, gerbils, squirrels, rats, opossums, raccoons....you get the picture. Does that make me 100% more likely to be crazy? :-)

I doubt there is much truth to this pile of "statistics." I grew up with dogs, but when I got my first cat, I became a cat person - at the age of 14. I've had at least one cat ever since, and currently have 2. I'd happily take in a couple more if my lease allowed it.

And my favorite Beatle is John Lennon.

Thanks, Lynn, still chuckling over this one. I have had cats and dogs most of my life. As a little old lady now, I only have cats, don''t have to walk them just change the litter box. I also had a pet possum last year.

This is obviously a bias study and when you read these blogs, you have to take that into account. This was written by a dog person as it describes faults of a cat person but not a dog person. This can't be a trusted truthful study. It doesn't describe me at all for my preference. Below is what wiki says is the most popular pet.

That will depend how you wish to quantify the numbers: by the total of homes or by the total number of animals.

According to the AVMA, who cited the 2007 U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook, if you go by the total number of owned animals, cats appear to be first:

1.Cats 81,721,000
2.Fish 75,898,000
3.Dogs 72,114,000
4.Birds 11,199,000
5.Livestock 10,995,000
6.Horses 7,295,000
7.Rabbits 6,171,000
8.Other Birds 4,966,000
9.All Others 3,664,000
10.Turtles 1,991,000
11.Hamsters 1,239,000
12.Ferrets 1,060,000
13.Guinea Pigs 1,004,000

Dogs are so much better to me, but I like all animals so much that although not vegan, I try not to eat them (or dairy, saddest of all abuse) very much anymore. Better for me and better for them!
