The president of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, ... called for a change in mindset for those who believe that women's presence in society is a threat. ... Iran had a 'long way to go' ... to achieve gender equality. ... Iran's laws are draconian in relation to women.

Iran does indeed have a ways to go, but they aren't nearly as bad as some other nations we call friends. I hope the current negotiations lead to less demonization and closer ties that we can use to pressure Iran and all the other nations that oppress women to instead empower women.

(only a modest-budget Hollywood-movie, but, as a first introduction into the insanity and extreme misogyny of islamism) recommended viewing:

David F, I appreciate that Islam has some different ideas to Christianity (and other religions too!), but this petition is not about beating down Islam but rather about lifting up women. All religions are subject to the interpretations of their religious leaders, including Christianity. ALL religions have extremists . . . just look at the right wing fanatical evangelical pseudo Christians that are or have taken over much of the US political theatre.

Change starts by lifting up, not tearing down.

Thanks everyone!

I am reminded of something my grandfather told me. The task may seem insurmountable. But if you don't try, if you don't persevere, absolutely nothing will be accomplished. That is assured. Where people try and persevere, hope lives!

Lynn, I agree with your grandfather; sounds like a quote i can only paraphrase: do not doubt for a moment the impact one determined individual can make.; possibly Jane Goodall.

Signed Lynn.I think it be a long time before women in muslim countries are treated as equals by their men..How can men who have regarded women as lesser beings with no rights for centuries change their cultural beliefs.

This is a noble effort and I applaud it.
The unfortunate part is, Iranian women, themselves, must fight for their own power and many will die in the process. This is the way it has always been. Nonetheless, we must support them, entirely.
However.......we are living in a situation where the good old white boys club in the U.S.A., is trying to take women back to the 19th century. They are attempting this objective, one step at a time.

ABORTION is the first step, and only foolish women will fall for it.
The second step is, refusing to vote for EQUAL PAY, and only foolish women will fall for it.
The third step, who knows; perhaps, it could be objecting to higher education in some fashion. This is only a guess and it could be something else, that I haven't even thought about.

It'is a scary thought to imagine, what these conservative nutjobs are teaching their daughters.
Hopefully, they will reject their instructions.

Noted, signed and shared. I think it's wonderful that the new president of Iran has come out publicly calling for gender equality. All it will take for it to happen in a country such as Iran would be for the muslim clergy to get behind it. If they did, this is something that could almost happen over night; unlike in the "free" US where gender equality is still a pipe dream and getting more and more a dream every day.

I remember watching a documentary not long after the fall of the Shah, a British woman who had married an Iranian man was interviewed and said that she felt no pressure as a woman, nor fear that the new regime would be harmful to women. I wonder if she still feels that way. Gender equality should be THE cause celebre of the world at this time in history. Because men have proven nothing if not the tact that they are not fit for leadership of any kind, in any place with their brutality and sadism toward each other and most disgustingly toward women. Time for a change, a big one. Let it begin.
