(Canada's fisheries minister on Wednesday warned the European Union that its proposed ban on seal products should not target his country's "humanely conducted hunt."

"Once again, we would like to caution European decision-makers: adopting broad regulations to ban products from a responsible, sustainable and well-regulated hunt is a slippery slope," said Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn.

"To bow to misinformation and emotional rhetoric in restricting the trade of humanely harvested animals would set a dangerous precedent for all wild hunts."

Although the ban is said to target Canada, Hearn insisted that Canada's annual slaughter of up to 275,000 seals is "a humanely conducted hunt," and a ban of Canadian seal products would be "without cause."

Canadian officials will be reviewing how the proposed regulations and any exemptions would apply to Canada, he added. )

How the mass slaughter of helpless creatures could be in any way associated to a wild hunt is beyond my grasp, the huevos of this guy !!!

Just come in for a quick peek and was happy to see this news, thanks Claudia!!

B U T . . .

IMPORTANT (from Humane Society International):

However, the Commission has included a PROBLEMATIC EXEMPTION in the proposal—for products from countries that can prove their hunting methods are "humane" and that the seals did not suffer unnecessarily. Such an exemption might allow countries to improve their regulations on paper while the cruelty continues in the field unchecked.

The good news is that there is STILL TIME TO ACT. The proposal will now be forwarded to the European Parliament, where it is possible this exemption may be removed. European citizens and their parliamentarians want a strong law—one that stops all trade in products derived from commercial seal hunts, which are inherently inhumane.

----> PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY to let the European Parliament know you support a total ban on seal product trade! Help us save the seals by signing the petition on this page. Then, after you've signed, please ask your friends to sign it, too.

The picture of the baby seal is the most heart stopping I've ever seen. The innocence an complete childlike trust in those eyes is unforgettable. Good for the guys who have worked so hard to bring all this to fruition.

TY Katia. signed. Have signed anything and everything on this since the 1960's. I saw one of these kills on the news and got sick and couldn't stop crying. I think it was greenpeace that went up and threw red dye on these beautiful babies and found they were being skinned alive in front of their mothers and the mothers were going crazy. I have had hundreds of nightmares thru the years after seein it on tv and get sick everytime it happens, year after year. What they do takes some kind of sich psycho to do this and listen to them without a grimace. If you find any more petitions, send them to me. Thank you so much
