A "priviledged class" is a farce, they are a butcher class. The reason the penalties are higher for this non-violent crime is sadly simple: the vivisectionists hide behind the shield of doing "research for the benefit of humanity," and as long as they can convince elected legislators of this lie, they will get protection. But the minute we can prove that their cruel butchery is a lie, a farce, and worthless to real scientists, they will abruptly lose the shielding they now enjoy.

On a personal note, it would gratify me eternally to strap in at least one of these sadists and subject them to their own "scientific experiments." I suspect they would not be so willing to continue their activities were they made to endure them.

I do not understand why alternatives to vivisection are not being used. What is the point of this torture of animals if not to "help" people? Are these people sadists or do they really believe in what they are doing? In the past, many medical discoveries may have been made through the use of animals in labs - I am open to education on this topic - however, I believe there must be alternatives available in the year 2007, and if so, there should no longer be such a thing as vivisection - it is cruel and inhumane and totally disrespectful of Life. I don't want to deny any medical improvements to those who are suffering, but I do not believe that animals have to die to achieve them. Therefore, this antiquated method which has become torture pure and simple needs to end NOW. Noted.

I fully agree that vivisection MUST STOP, and that most "animal research" is unnecessary and inhumane. There is a small minority of animal research that is, in my opinion, justified. Examples are ethology, and even some lab studies such as Irene Pepperberg's work with Alex and other African grey parrots which has helped us understand teh intelligence and emotional complexity of some of our fellow creatures:

" My research is also really important for the pet industry. What I've tried to explain to parrot owners is that what they have in a cage in their living room is a creature with the sentience of a four- to six-year-old child. I try to convince them that you can't just lock it in a cage for eight hours a day without any kind of interaction. I don't mean just interpersonal interaction, or having other birds around; parrots have to be intellectually challenged. In the wild they are constantly challenged. They are challenged to find food, they are challenged to avoid predators, and they are challenged by the intra-flock interactions.

In contrast, what does a pet do? The bird sits alone in a cage all day, with ample food and water in nice accessible cups, and vegetates. Some birds in such situations pluck their feathers; they scream, they bite — they act in ways similar to those of a 4-year-old having a temper tantrum because it had been left it alone in a playpen for eight hours with maybe one toy and some snacks. I've tried to help these people understand what they are getting themselves into, and hopefully have convinced them to enrich the lives of these birds as much as possible.

One of the other things to remember when you have a pet parrot is that this bird is a flock creature. One parrot in the wild is a dead parrot. It can't forage and look for predators at the same time. So when you have one bird in your house, or even two birds of separate species, you have a bird that is seeking companions as well as stimulation.

One of the things we were trying to do when I was at the Media Lab was to devise different types of computer-based enrichment programs for these birds. We created something called "InterPet Explorer," which was a modified Web browser for the bird. We hadn't developed it fully, but the bird had four choices of input. It could see video, listen to music, see pictures, or play a game that we were designing. Within each of those categories were four choices. Under the music selection, for example, the bird could initially choose from clips of rock, country, classical or jazz. Alex would play with this system for about an hour in the morning before we came into the lab.

At first he was interacting with it a lot, and then seemed to lose interest; the students were concerned that the system was a failure. I asked them, "Well, how often are you changing content?" The students looked at me as though I was insane and replied, "What do you mean?" And I said, "How often do you want to hear Vivaldi's Cello Concerto?" They then reorganized the system to use four different channels of Internet radio so that Alex had something different whenever he clicked a choice, and Alex's interest shot back up."

There is no justification for unusual protection of animal researchers. Vivisection, animal testing, and most animal research should cease, and the animal research which is allowed must be both intensely regulated and fully transparent to prevent any mistreatment of animals. Standards should be similar to the standards for research on humans (and probably those standards should generally be raised) and sometimes higher. Some conditions which humans can tolerate, such as MRI, would be intolerably frightening to an animal, and therefore animals should not be subjected to such conditions for research.

A picture says a thousand words- I have shown pictures to several people ,some being strangers, and they gasp. But do they go home and think about it? I have given many people the care2 site .I have signed every petition I can find. What do we do? Pray ,weep,ache,share,sign ,scream,donate, it is all worth it for me to hurt --because the pain I feel is nothing compared to the pain of these beings. :**( WE must find a way to protect what God has let us in charge of.

Vivisection has no place in our world. .and is a waste of scientific research. After reading a very lengthy report, put out by a member of PETA,who actually worked temporarily for "The Huntington Research Labs".I was horrified beyond repair,(as she must have felt a million times deeper),to learn of all the atrocities taking place there. So much loss of life,for so many needless reasons..often because of severe and criminal neglect and/or abuse!
Apathy at its finest..without an ounce of reverence for these poor unwanted lives! The scariest, but probably not worst of it all..is that our own race is in danger and being completely lied to,regarding the safety of drugs in which are animal tested!
Though most of us here love and care for our animal friends,we must always realize that we are each designed differently,and therefore have much different needs in the ways that we tolerate drugs,are effected by them..How much,how often and for what reasons, should each approved drug be taken!
Many humans, have become seriously ill and have even died by taking a drug which was FDA approved and which had tested safe in animals.This is a flawed and potentially lethal way to allow medications into the market..In essence,it should be "we" who are considered the true guinea pigs in the field of pharmacology research... It should also be seen as the biggest waste of innocent life and unjustifiable act of torture and brutality, that we casually allow to continue,,in the name of science!
As far as the pure and utter evil,committed by these facilities claiming to be legal animal shelters..They will answer in the end .Adopting out a few of their unwanted here and there..only to turn a profit from the sale of all the others..is indeed heinous!
Cant people,(even money hungry SOB's,)ever understand that they will never be taking it with them,after their time here is over.It is a GOD to some,and it may indeed buy some corruption.

Nur, may I attempt to address your comment before it produces a landslide of ill-founded, inflammatory remarks.

The author refers to "Islamic fanaticism" in one paragraph of his article. And whether their Jihad is a justified war against Capitalist Imperialism or not, it seems fundamentalist "terrorism" IS a fact of life. I am also aware of the fact that there are many Muslims around the world who CONDEMN these violent acts as well.

I think you're fishing for something that isn't there. The author, as well as the vast majority of comments here, is simply making the observation that violence against innocent animals (in laboratories or anywhere else, for that matter) - like violence against innocent people - does NOT deserve Government support and protection! Nor does public protest against that violence deserve to be punished or muzzled!

Regarding your question as to the religion of the "butchers"? Sadly, the world's cities and towns are FULL of butchers of ALL religions. In my humble opinion, one of the greatest shortcomings of most of history's MAN MADE organized religions is their "interpretation" of God's "devine" word to kill the beautiful beings of his creation and consume their flesh! Be it "Halal", "Kosher", or the finest "Free Range Organic", nothing can absolve the butchers (and consumers) of their sins unless they stop!

That goes for the Vivisectors, too!

My heart explodes to think/imagine what all those poor animals have to suffer...and for what???I pray for the day when they'll be a stop to this kind of cruelty.
