Quote of the Week

"Scientists at Duke University in North Carolina have created pollen models that show tree pollen traveling from a forest in North Carolina for over 1,000 kilometers northward into eastern Canada. Scientists researching sterility in trees have admitted that 100 percent guaranteed sterility in GE trees is impossible. This evidence implies that if GE trees are released into the environment, widespread and irreversible contamination of native forests cannot be prevented."

"Gene escape from GE trees is regarded as inevitable. Trees have many ways to spread their genes: by pollen, seeds, roots, shoots, suckers or regrowth from broken twigs. Wind, rain, birds, insects, and other pollinators can carry pollen. Studies have shown that pollen in the atmosphere remains viable long enough to allow for long-distance gene flow by pollen migration. Isolation barriers are likely to be only partially effective in controlling gene escape, and while flow might be reduced, it seems certain that some level of gene flow to wild relatives will occur. Update:
17,500 Comments Against GE Eucalyptus Trees!
This past summer, the STOP GE Trees Campaign mobilized with the Center for Food Safety, Organic Consumer's Association and other groups to collect comments opposing the USDA's plans to allow ArborGen to mass-plant 260,000 GE eucalyptus trees across the US South. A record 17,500 comments were received opposing these franken-eucalyptus trees. Only 39 comments were received by the USDA in favor of the trees.
