delayed gratification is considered desirable by our culture - this test reflects a bunch of experiences (does child trust that the promise will be kept? Has the child waited with others for a good thing?)

I do think that teachers have taught this in early grades - interesting that the best 7th grade teachers I've known do emphasize waiting.
