I'm embarassed that this is taking place here in Canada. It's so very true that buying ethically/organically is better for us and for the environment but there is a humanitarian element as well. Any one of us can call or visit local farms and inquire about their practices. I have no problem making sure my money is supporting a company or farm whose values are in keeping with mine.

I guess I just took it for granted that these workers had protection from the government. I'm surprised that this is happening here.

I used to support a few local farmers until I made an effort to find out exactly what they were doing. I'm sad to say that the image of organic/humane farming doesn't always live up to the hype.

There doesn't seem to be many effective options open to those who want to support ethical farming. Surprising that even buying local doesn't necessarily support ethical treatment. What about Fair Trade Certified?

Hopefully Fair Trade Certified is indeed fair trade certified. I wnet to an workshop presented by a Fair Trade company from Peru and was advised to always try to dig a big deeper and ask a lot of questions if possible to find out how fair trade it actually is.
